  • The Lead: The No. 12 West Texas A&M men's basketball team opened the Rollins Las Vegas Classic with a hard-fought 65-62 win over Southern Indiana Monday afternoon at the Doolittle Community Center.  WT led by as many as 11 in the game, but held off the Eagles in the second half for the win.  Three Buffs were in double figures led by junior Ryan Quaid with a double-double on 18 points and 11 rebounds.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • The game was nip-and-tuck early as USI held an early three point lead five minutes in, as it would be the largest lead for the Screaming Eagles in the game.
  • WT led 15-13 through the first ten minutes of the game as Quaid had an early eight points and three rebounds as he opened the game 4 of 5 from the field.
  • Senior Jordan Evan hit a pair of big triples for the Buffs as WT led 22-15 with 8:55 left in the first half.
  • Two free throws from senior David Chavlovich pushed the lead to nine at 24-15.
  • USI's Nate Hansen cut the deficit to six at 26-20, but the Buffs stretched the lead one again back to eight and Quaid hit back-to-back buckets for the Buffs and a 34-25 lead at intermission.
  • The Screaming Eagles heated up in the second half as Marcellous Washington buried a triple cutting the WT lead to 42-40 with 13:34 left, but Quaid had the answer at the other end.
  • USI tied the game at 44 on a layup from DayJar Dickson, but Evans responded with a triple at the other end as the Buffs quickly swelled the lead to a game-high 10 at 54-44 with 8:13 left on a jumper from sophomore Jordan Collins for an 11-0 run capped with a free throw from Chavlovich.
  • A triple from Mateo Rivera cut the deficit to 55-50 with 5:29 left, but a layup from Quaid pushed the lead to seven.
  • The Screaming Eagles used a 6-0 run for a 57-56 deficit with 3:28 left on a jumper from leading scorer Alex Stein, but WT freshman Gaige Prim scored a layup at the other end pushing the lead back to three.
  • WT led 56-51 with 1:43 left on a jumper from freshman CJ Jennings, but a layup from Hansen cut the deficit to three and Dickson pulled USI within one at 61-60 with 29 seconds left.
  • Chavlovich buried two free throws, but Stein scored his 19th point of the game cutting the WT lead back to one.
  • USI fouled junior Gach Gach, who calmly buried two free throws with six seconds left and a 65-62 lead.
  • Stein had a good look at the buzzer for the equalizing triple, but it caromed off the rim.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • For the half, WT shot 15 of 37 from the field for 40.5 percent, while going just 2 of 8 from beyond the arc and converted on its two free throw attempts.Quaid had 12 points and five rebounds, while Chavlovich added 10 points in the half.
  • USI shot 10 of 29 from the field and 2 of 9 from beyond the arc while going 3 of 4 from the line.WT held a 24-18 lead in rebounding as the teams committed a combined 13 fouls in the half and had just five combined turnovers with WT committing just one miscue.
  • WT finished the game shooting 40 percent on 26 of 65 from the field, but went a season-low 4 of 16 from beyond the arc and 9 of 10 from the line.Quaid went 9 of 13 from the field with 11 rebounds, one assist and one steal.He finished with his fifth double-double of the season and 11th for his career.
  • Chavlovich finished with 15 points and 7 of 8 from the line, along with four assists and a steal.Evans had four triples and 14 points.
  • The Buffs outrebounded USI 41-34 and led 36-32 in points in the paint, along with 20-6 in second chance points and 15-8 in points off turnovers as WT made USI pay for its eight mistakes.WT had just six turnovers in the game.
  • Stein finished with 19 points on 8 of 17 from the field and five rebounds.Hansen had 13 points off the bench and Dickson had 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
  • The Screaming Eagles shot 51.6 percent in the second half and 43.3 percent for the game on 26 of 60, while going 5 of 18 from beyond the arc and 5 of 7 from the line.
  • WT snapped the Screaming Eagles' seven-game winning streak and improved to 2-0 all-time against Southern Indiana.
