  • The Lead: Off a set piece in the 75th minute, West Texas A&M sophomore Shanelle Arjoon headed in the breakthrough goal as the No. 3-seeded Lady Buffs upset top-seeded and 15th-ranked Angelo State Sunday in the 2017 Lone Star Conference Championship match.  WT wins its seventh Lone Star Conference tournament title and earns the automatic berth into the NCAA South Central Regional. 
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • The Lady Buffs came out where they left off in the win over Texas A&M-Commerce on Friday with four shots and two on frame in the first 10 minutes of the championship. 
  • At the 8:45 mark, WT sophomore Khalie Jacob, who has two goals in the LSC Tournament thus far, hit the post.
  • ASU had its first good look at the 20:39 mark as Trenady Scott fired a shot, but the Lady Buff "D" came up with the team save preserving the scoreless game.
  • The Rambelles then got a shot from Callie Smith as WT junior goalkeeper Courtney Dippel came up with her first save of the match at the 27:34 mark.
  • WT had a pair of corner kicks late in the half as the game went to halftime scoreless.
  • Dippel had two more saves midway through the second half, as WT struggled with just one shot through the first 20 minutes of the second stanza. 
  • A free kick from sophomore Marlene van Mourik on the seventh foul by the Rambelles and she found Arjoon for her second goal of the season, on a header past Cude and a 1-0 lead at the 74:04 mark.
  • The Rambelles came right back with a shot and save from Dipple for her fifth stop of the game.
  • Down to the closing minutes, ASU's Analise Watson had a shot blocked at the 85:14 mark for the 14th shot of the game from the Rambelles.
  • Watson had a header in the closing seconds sailing wide. 
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • The teams combined for 17 shots in the first half and seven on goal as WT had nine shots and three on frame, while ASU had eight shots and four on goal.
  • Dippel had two saves in the half and Samantha Cude had three stops for ASU.
  • The Lady Buffs had two team saves in the half.
  • Jacob had four shots for WT in the first half with one on goal, while Cassandra Moosburger had two shots and one on frame for ASU.
  • For the game, WT had 14 shots with five on goal and recorded seven saves with six corner kicks, while ASU had 15 shots and seven on goal, four saves and one corner. 
  • The Lady Buffs had eight fouls in the game, while ASU had seven as the seventh proved costly leading to the goal.
  • Jacob had five shots with one on goal to lead the Lady Buffs, while Arjoon, who came off the bench, scored on her lone shot, while van Mourik had the assist and one shot.
  • Dippel had five saves in the game for her seventh solo shutout of the season and second-straight.
  • Cude had four saves and the one goal against.
  • The win marked the third against a ranked team for the Lady Buffs this season (3-0), while WT won its seventh tournament championship game (7-7) the most of any team in the conference.
  • WT improved to 27-13 all-time in the Lone Star Conference and will make its first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 2012.
  • The ten wins by WT marks the 17th season of ten or more wins in a season for WT since the program began in 1996.
  • This will be the tenth trip to the NCAA Championship for the Lady Buffs.
  • Five Lady Buffs were named to the All-Tournament team as Jacob was named Most Valuable Player.  Along with her, freshman Mackenzie Taylor, Dippel, freshman Cheyenne Orozco and junior Khadidra Debesette earned all-tournament honors.
