  • Records: West Texas A&M 9-6-5, Texas A&M-Commerce 12-4-3

  • Location: San Angelo, Texas (ASU Soccer Field)

  • The Lead: A goal just 42 second into the second half by West Texas A&M redshirt freshman Hannah Kelley sparked the No. 3-seeded Lady Buffs to a 2-0 victory Friday afternoon in the Lone Star Conference semifinals against No. 2-seeded Texas A&M-Commerce.  WT advances to its league-best 14th LSC Championship match Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Both teams had some looks during the first 26 minutes of play as both goalkeepers were up to the task as WT junior Courtney Dippel made good on her one save as did Caitlin Duty for TAMUC.
  • TAMUC had four early shots, while WT had two, both from sophomore Marlene van Mourik.
  • Sabrina Mungia had a shot and a save by Dippel at the 31:46 mark, while WT sophomore Samantha Silvestre had a good look at the 40:10 mark with a save from Duty for the Lady Buffs' second shot on frame.  Moments later, sophomore Shanelle Arjoon had a shot and save late in the half at the 42:25 mark.
  • Following the third foul on WT, TAMUC had one last opportunity in the 45th minute, but was unable to get a shot as the first half came to an end.
  • Just 42 seconds into the second half, redshirt freshman Hannah Kelley scored her third goal of the season to give WT a 1-0 lead off a collected rebound.
  • Junior Khadidra Debesette scored her first goal of the year at the 57:54 mark for a 2-0 WT lead as the Lady Buffs opened the second half scoring on two of their first three shots.
  • Dippel came up with her fourth save of the game as Campuzano had a good look at the 64:55 mark.
  • Both teams had one shot over the final 26 minutes as van Mourik recorded a shot on goal.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • For the first half, WT had six shots with four on goal, while TAMUC had five shots and two on frame, while van Mourik led the Lady Buffs with two shots and one on frame.
  • TAMUC was led by Leslie Campuzano with two shots.
  • Duty had four saves in the half, while Dippel had two stops.
  • In the previous two meetings this season, with both teams winning on their respective home fields, there were goals within the first 11 minutes of the matches.
  • For the game, WT had 11 shots with eight on frame, while TAMUC had eight shots and four on frame.
  • Kelley and van Mourik each had three shots with Kelley's goal and van Mourik had two shots on goal.
  • Campuzano had four shots with one on frame for the Lions.
  • Kelley's goal marked the second time this season WT scored the first goal in the three meetings.  TAMUC came back to win with three-straight goals in the 3-1 Lions' victory in Commerce on Oct. 20.
  • The two goals allowed by TAMUC marked just the fourth time all season the Lions had allowed two goals in a game (1-2) with one being the 2-1 loss in Canyon, and had not conceded two goals since Oct. 1 in a 2-1 loss against Midwestern State.
  • The 2-0 win by WT marked the first shutout for the Lady Buffs against the Lions since a 1-0 win on Sept. 28, 2014, in Commerce.
  • WT is riding a current three-game winning streak heading into the conference final, as it is the longest winning streak of the season for the Lady Buffs.
  • The Lady Buffs are making their 14th trip to the conference finals as they are 6-7 and this marks their fourth trip to the finals in the last six years (1-2) with the last being in a penalty kick loss to Midwestern State in 2014.  WT won the tournament in 2012 in Canyon in double overtime against Incarnate Word.
  • WT improved to 26-13 all-time in the LSC Tournament in its 20th appearance.
  • Lady Buff head coach Chad Webb improved to 73-65-17 at the helm of the program and now is 7-8-1 all-time against TAMUC.  WT, as a program, is 23-14-2 all-time against Texas A&M-Commerce.
  • Both teams entered the conference tournament on the outside looking in of regionals as TAMUC was seventh and the Lady Buffs weren't in the top ten in the region rankings.

UP NEXT:

  • The Lady Buffs will await the winner of top-seeded Angelo State versus No. 5-seed Eastern New Mexico as that came follows this game.  The LSC Championship is set for 1 p.m. on Sunday.  WT went 0-0-2 against Eastern New Mexico this season and 0-1-1 against Angelo State.
