  • The Lead: A goal in the 99th minute by sophomore Khaline Jacob sent the West Texas A&M women's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over visiting Texas Woman's in the first round of the 2017 Lone Star Conference Women's Soccer Championship.  The Lady Buffs advance to the Lone Star Conference semifinals Friday at Angelo State against No. 2-seed Texas A&M-Commerce.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • The Lady Buffs had numerous chances in the first half with two shots in the first minute of the contest.
  • Freshman Noir Hawash had a great look with a save from TWU goalkeeper Maddie Vickroy at the 9:36 mark. 
  • Jacob had a good look at the 20:24 mark as Vickroy was up to the task, while WT junior goalkeeper Courtney Dippel had one save in the first half in a scoreless game.
  • WT had 10 shots in the first half and four on frame, while TWU had four shots in the half and one on frame.
  • In the second half, TWU had a barrage of blocked shots and finally capitalized at the 66:30 mark as Chelsea Martin scored her seventh goal of the season as Maddie Nolton assisted for a 1-0 lead.
  • Lady Buff sophomore Marlene van Mourik scored her fourth goal of the season at the 72:41 mark on an assist from Jacob off a centered pass to the right corner past Vickroy.
  • Not three minutes later, Jacob scored her first goal and third of the season off a corner kick from van Mourik for a 2-1 lead.
  • TWU wouldn't go quietly as the Pioneers found the back of the net with 1:48 left in regulation as Libby Murphy scored off an assist from Jazmine Navarro and Chelsea Martin to tie the game.
  • In overtime, Jacob scored the golden goal and game winner at the 98:29 mark as she received a centering pass from van Mourik and scored to left corner.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • For the game, WT had 19 shots with nine on goal as Jacob had five shots with four on frame, two goals and one assist, while van Mourik had four shots with one on goal and two assists.
  • TWU was led by Martin with five shots, one on goal, one score and one assist.
  • The Lady Buffs had five corner kicks, while TWU had seven.
  • TWU had six saves in the game from Vickroy, while Dippel had one.
  • This marked the first overtime win for the Lady Buffs this season (1-2).
  • WT head coach Chad Webb improved to 72-65-17 overall and 7-4 all-time in the LSC Championship.
  • The Lady Buffs all-time are 25-13 in the LSC Championship.
