  • The Lead: The West Texas A&M women's soccer team posted a 3-1 victory at #16 Midwestern State in the regular season finale for both teams Sunday.  The Lady Buffs had an outstanding game from their freshmen as Jessica Diaz scored a goal and assisted on two, while freshman goalkeeper Syneca Pyszko made her first career start.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • WT got on the board off a penalty kick in the 36th minute as Diaz scored on a penalty kick on her first PK attempt of her Lady Buff career.  MSU's Brandy Villasana received a yellow card setting up Diaz for the PK.
  • The game remained 1-0 at halftime as the Lady Buffs had seven shots in the first half to five for MSU.
  • Pyszko had two saves on five shots in the first half, including a save just 53 seconds into the match.
  • In the second half, the Lady Buffs continued the attack as freshman Noir Hawash had a good look with a save from MSU keeper Courtney Burnette at the 52:21 mark.
  • WT sophomore Khaline Jacob scored her second goal in as many games at the 57:13 mark as Diaz assisted her on a cross from the left wing to center for a 2-0 lead.
  • Just 4:14 later, Hawash scored her fifth goal, giving WT a 3-0 lead off assists from Jacob and Diaz as she got a pair of passes on the cross from the right wing to center. 
  • MSU answered right back, scoring on WT for the first time this season as Destinee Williamson scored on a throughball from 17 out on right wing with an assist from Sarah Stewart.  It was Williamson's seventh goal of the season.
  • The Lady Buffs and Pyszko didn't panic as they continued the strong play and Pyszko made a great save on a Stewart attempt at the 74:53 mark as WT went on for the 3-1 win.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • The win marked the first time in series history WT has swept a regular season series against Midwestern State when playing two games.
  • The Lady Buffs outscored MSU 6-1 in two meetings this season and pulled within 21-20-3 all-time in the series. 
  • The win marked the second-straight win by the Lady Buffs in Wichita Falls as they won 2-1 there last season.
  • For the game, WT had 17 shots with nine on frame, while MSU had 15 shots and six on goal. 
  • Hawash and sophomore Shanelle Arjoon each had four shots, with Hawash with four shots on goal and a score.
  • Diaz had two shots with one on frame, along with a goal and two assists. 
  • Pyszko had five saves and one goal against in her first career start, while Burnette had six saves and three goals against.
  • Williamson had six shots with three on goal and a score for the Mustangs.
  • WT takes a 5-4 lead in the Highway 287 Challenge Cup following the win.

  • The Lady Buffs will host No. 6-seed Texas Woman's Wednesday at 7 p.m. at The Pitch in the first round of the Lone Star Conference Tournament. 
  • The winner will advance to the semifinal round on Friday at 5 p.m. against No. 2-seed Texas A&M-Commerce at Angelo State.  The 2017 Lone Star Conference Championship game is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. in San Angelo, Texas.
