Challinor’s Two Goals Leads Buffs to 2-1 Victory at Eastern New Mexico

  • The Lead: Two first half goals from junior Callum Challinor sparked the West Texas A&M men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory at Eastern New Mexico Saturday afternoon.  WT won its tenth game of the season with the win, marking the 22nd season of double-digit wins for the Buffs since the program's inception in 1991.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • Just 1:51 into the contest, Challinor scored his eighth goal and first of the game off a kick from 15 yards out from junior Ivan Ulloa and it hit off the cross bar and deflected in by Challinor for a 1-0 lead.
  • Following the score, WT had have consecutive shots from the 3:45 mark to the 12:03 mark capped by a save from ENMU keeper Cody Wann. 
  • Challinor got on the board again in the 24th minute as junior Reece Schattle had a throw in to Challinor and scored from the left side for a 2-0 lead.
  • WT held a 2-0 lead at intermission, but ENMU got on the board in the 47th minute a Christopher Mesquita scored off a cross pass from Nicolai Alstrom from seven yards out for a 2-1 score. 
  • At the 59:06 mark, Wann received a straight red card as the Greyhounds played down a man the rest of the way. 
  • Mesquita had a chance at the equalizer at the 75:04 mark as the shot was blocked, followed by a blocked shot by the Greyhounds at the 79:47 mark and a header off a corner kick from Ignacio Dicun sailed wide. 
  • The Greyhounds had one last opportunity at the 85:47 mark as they had a corner kick and Alstrom fired a shot with a team save by the Buffs, preserving the lead.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • The Buffs dominated the attack, leading 23-11 in shots and 9-4 in shots on goal.  Junior Julio Vargas had a team-high six shots with three on goal while Challinor had four shots and two on goal with two scores. 
  • Schattle also had six shots with three on goal and an assist.
  • Mesquita paced the Greyhounds with three shots, one on goal and the lone goal.
  • WT freshman Alexander Vencel played all 90 minutes with two saves, while Wann had three saves before the ejection and Yui Nascimiento finished the game with three saves for the final 30:54.
