  • The Lead: The West Texas A&M women's soccer team scored the first goal, but gave up two goals in a span of 2:02 in the first half en route to a 3-1 loss at Texas A&M-Commerce Friday night.  WT sophomore Shanelle Arjoon had the goal for the Lady Buffs.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • Arjoon scored the lone goal for WT at the 10:04 mark into the match after a header was missed, she put the rebound in from two feet out for a 1-0 lead. 
  • Earlier in the half, TAMUC was awarded a penalty kick at the 6:19 mark and Michelle Kotlik missed the shot wide.
  • Both teams had a number of shots in the early going as both goalkeepers were up to task following the WT goal, but 29th minute, TAMUC evened the game on a goal by Sophie Haywood with assists from Kotlik and Kara Blasingame on a pass in from deep, headed toward Haywood for the score.
  • 2:02 later, Sabrina Munguia scored her first of two goals in the contest giving TAMUC a 2-1 lead.
  • WT had chances early in the second half with a shot from freshman Taylor Heckroth and save from Caitlin Duty.
  • At the 62:15 mark, the Lions added the insurance goal as Munguia was on the receiving end of an assist from Delaney Bunselmeyer and Katie Givens for a header and a 3-1 lead.
  • WT had three more shots with two saves from Duty the rest of the way.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • For the game, WT had nine shots with six on goal, while junior goalkeeper Courtney Dippel made three saves.
  • Arjoon had three shots and two on goal to lead the team with the one score.  It was her first goal of the season for WT.
  • TAMUC countered with 12 shots and six on frame as Munguia had two shots and two goals, while each of the three goals had two assists by six different players.  Haywood had two shots with a goal and an assist.
  • Duty had five saves in the contest.
  • WT splits the season series with TAMUC as both teams won on its respective home field.
