Season Stats

THE BASICS:

  • Score: West Texas A&M 1, UT Permian Basin 0

  • Records: West Texas A&M 6-3-4 (4-0-3 LSC), UT Permian Basin 1-10-1 (1-6 LSC)

  • Location: Canyon, Texas (The Pitch)

  • The Lead: A goal by West Texas A&M freshman Lauren Burk in the 38th minute proved to be the difference as the Lady Buffs posted a 1-0 victory over visiting UT Permian Basin Friday evening for the season-sweep.  The game was delayed one hour, 40 minutes due to lightning before the game started.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • WT dominated the play throughout and had multiple good looks, but hit the post and crossbar, while UTPB goalkeeper Cheona Crites came up with some outstanding saves as well.
  • The Lady Buffs had their first good look as freshman Noir Hawash, who had a hat trick against the Falcons in the first meeting, had an open look at the net, but a UTPB defender was able to get her foot on the ball before it went in.
  • Sophomore Marlene van Mourik returned to action Friday after missing the previous four games and hit the crossbar in a flurry of shots and corner kicks midway through the first half.
  • Burk scored her first collegiate goal off an assist from van Mourik as van Mourik streaked down the right side and kicked to Burk for a shot across the front of the goal at the 37:34 mark.
  • UTPB had a great opportunity as Kessie Stocker drove down field following the WT score and fired as a WT defender cleared the ball from the open net.
  • Midway through the second half, van Mourik hit the post twice in another barrage of shots by the Lady Buffs and later, Crites came up with a great save on a sophomore Khaline Jacob attempt resulting in a corner kick.
  • Jacob then hit the post on a great look as that was the theme of the night for the Lady Buffs.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • WT outshot UTPB 24-6 and 14-3 in shots on goal, but Crites was up to the task with 12 saves in the game and one team save.
  • Junior goalkeeper Courtney Dippel had two saves and a team save in the game, while van Mourik had a game-high eight shots with three on frame and an assist.  Her assist ties her first the team-lead with Hawash.
  • Dippel dropped her goals against average under 1.00 at 0.97 with her fifth solo shutout of the season and she has one combined shutout.
  • The Lady Buffs now lead the all-time series with UTPB 16-0 and have posted seven-straight shutouts in the series and are 7-0 all-time in Canyon.
  • WT now has a two-point lead in the conference standings with 15 points as the Angelo State (13 points) match at Eastern New Mexico is moved to Saturday morning due to storms in Portales, N.M.
  • Angelo State had a 2-0 lead on ENMU when the game was moved to Saturday in the 26th minute.  The game Saturday will being from start as none of the stats will count from Friday night.

UP NEXT:

  • The Lady Buffs will host Angelo State Sunday at 1 p.m. at The Pitch in a key Lone Star Conference match for first place in the league standings.
