  • Location: Austin, Texas (Lewis-Chen Family Field)

  • The Lead: No. 18 St. Edward's scored the golden goal at the 104:01 mark for a 1-0 victory over upset-minded West Texas A&M Thursday afternoon in Heartland Conference play.  WT had three chances in overtime, but were unable to get any on frame as the five-game unbeaten streak came to an end for the Buffs.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The first half saw a scoreless draw as each team had four shots, but none on goal.
  • It also was a very physical first half with two yellow cards issued per team and 14 fouls between the two sides, with ten fouls on the Buffs and four on the Hilltoppers.
  • In the 69th minute, the Hilltoppers had the first shot on goal and, following a foul, WT freshman goalkeeper Alexander Vencel made a great diving save to preserve the 0-0 score off a free kick by the Hilltoppers.
  • SEU had a late corner with just over three minutes left as Vencel came up with another save off a header by Owain Hoskins.
  • In the final minute WT junior Reece Schattle had his shot blocked with 35 seconds left as the game headed to overtime.
  • SEU had its shot blocked as time expired in the second half.
  • The Buffs had three chances in overtime, but were unable to get any on frame as SEU had two shots in the extra-time.
  • SEU's Dylan Armstrong scored his seventh goal of the season on an assist from Covarrubias on a thru ball from the 16 to left side of the box for the score at the 104:01 mark.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Junior Julio Vargas had two shots for the Buffs to lead the team, while SEU's Pablo Covarrubias had two shots as well for the Hilltoppers.  Covarrubias was the lone starter for SEU who took a shot in the half.
  • Thursday's match became the third match in series history to go to overtime (1-1).
  • Through 90 minutes, WT held a 14-9 lead in shots, but SEU had three shots on goal and none for the Buffs – all coming in the second half.
  • WT outshot SEU 17-11, but didn't have a shot on goal the entire game.   SEU had four shots on frame as Vencel made three saves.
  • The game saw 26 fouls with five yellow cards with three on SEU and two on WT.
  • Armstrong, off the bench, had two shots on goal for the Hilltoppers and the score.
  • Vargas had four shots for the Buffs to lead the team.
  • WT now stands at 13-8 all-time against St. Edward's but the Hilltoppers have won the last three meetings in the series.

UP NEXT:

  • The Buffs conclude their six-game road trip Saturday at 1 p.m. at Dallas Baptist.
  • Following that game, WT will return home for the first time since Sept. 23 with an Oct. 19 matchup against Lubbock Christian at 7 p.m. at The Pitch.
  • Three of the Buffs' final four games of the regular season will be at The Pitch.
