Lady Buffs Start Slow but Outlast UT Permian Basin in Five Sets on Tuesday Night in Odessa

ODESSA, Texas – West Texas A&M started slow but responded as they saw their third straight match go to a fifth and deciding set as they outlasted the Falcons of UT Permian Basin (23-25, 21-25, 25-19, 25-11, 15-6) on Tuesday night at the Falcon Dome in Odessa, Texas during Lone Star Conference action. The Lady Buffs pick up their second straight win to move to 8-5 (4-1 LSC) while the Falcons drop their third straight to fall to 5-9 (1-4 LSC) on the season.
 
The Lady Buffs were led offensively by Cori Haley with 16 kills on 41 swings with four errors to hit .293 on the night to go along with 10 digs for a double-double while Elisa Bentsen (12), Michaela Montgomery (11) and Taylor Kress (10) registered double-digit kills. Selena Batiste paced the WT offense with 31 assists followed by Kyli Schulz with 15 while Lauren Britten led the Lady Buffs with 12 digs in the win. WT registered 61 kills on 143 swings with 14 attack errors to hit .329 as a team with 51 assists, 51 digs and 16 total blocks.
 
UT Permian Basin was led by Caitlyn Guajardo with 24 kills on 48 swings with just four attack errors to hit an impressive .417 on the night followed by Charlesia Jones with eight and Travanna Matthews with seven, Mallory Nicholson led all players with 46 assists in the match while Brianna Edwards registered a match high 21 digs. The Falcons registered 54 kills on 152 swings with 30 attack errors to hit .158 as a team with 52 assists, 56 digs and six total blocks.

The Lady Buffs return to the friendly confines of the WTAMU Fieldhouse "The Box" this weekend as they host Western New Mexico on Friday night with first serve set for 6 p.m. followed by a Saturday afternoon matchup with the rival Greyhounds of Eastern New Mexico on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Canyon. The Mustangs (10-4, 2-1 LSC) and Greyhounds (6-7, 1-2 LSC) will face off with each other on Wednesday night in Portales.
