No. 15 Buffs Power Past Texans to Take Series Finale

Box Score / Season Stats

CANYON, Texas –
The #15 ranked Buffs offense came to life in the series finale against Tarleton State on Sunday afternoon at Wilder Park. WT won 18-8 in eight innings as the Texans struggled on the mound going through five pitchers. Luke Wiechec (1-0) picked up his first win of the season pitching three innings allowing one hit while striking out three batters.

The Buffs put up a season high in runs (18) and hits (25) including five different players with four hits including Christian Loya who had a team-high four RBI. Trace Hansen continued his hot streak at the plate with another home run, his third in the past two games. They hit .546 (25-for-48) in the game including seven doubles, one triple, two home runs and 16 RBI. The pitching staff combined to strike out nine batters with only three walks and 11 hits.

The Buffs fell behind in the first inning, 3-0, for the third time in the series courtesy of four hits from the Texans. WT wasted no time taking the leading by scoring eight in the bottom half of the inning, all coming with two outs. John Baiada got it started with his single to right field followed by a single by Christian Loya to plate another Buff. Jake Fuller singled to center to tie the game before advancing to second on a walk by Mason Shiflett. Troy LaBrie proceeded to single to center to plate both Fuller and Loya. The Texans brought in a new pitcher, Cody Nitson, but he was unable to get out of the inning as Trace Hansen took the second pitch of the at-bat over the left field wall. That was his third running in the last two innings.

The Texans got one back in the second inning following a double by Dalton Richardson, who later came around to score on a wild pitch. Christian Loya extended the lead to 10-4 in the second inning when he took a 3-1 pitch over the center field wall to score Jason Day. That was Loya's fifth home in the past two weekends.

TSU got three back in the third inning on back-to-back-to-back doubles to start off the inning before Josh Payne struck out three batters to stop the Texans from adding anymore runs. The Buffs responded with runs of their own in the bottom half of the third. Hansen opened the inning with a double to left before scoring on a single by Day.

The Buffs added another run in the fifth to make the lead 12-7. Hansen started the inning with a double to center before coming around to score on a Cole double to left center.  WT continued to pile it on in the seventh inning with three more runs. Cole started the inning with a double before being brought home on a single from Day. He advanced to third on a double from Baiada. Day and Baiada both came around to score after miscues by the Texans.

TSU got one back in the eighth before allowing the Buffs to put the game away with three more runs in the bottom half of the inning. Trace Hansen picked up his third double of the game to lead off the inning before Cole brought home with a single. Blake Weaver reached on a fielder's choice and came around to score after a single from Day. Weaver scored when Baiada was out at first and Day advanced to second.
