LAWTON, Okla.  – The No. 12-ranked West Texas A&M baseball team swept the final doubleheader Monday afternoon at Cameron, 5-4 in eight innings and 10-0 in the nightcap in a run-rule shortened game for a 3-1 series win as junior hurler Joshua Payne pitched a complete game shutout in the nightcap.  WT improved to 17-5 overall and 6-2 in Lone Star Conference play, while Cameron fell to 13-6 and 2-6 in league play.

The series win by the Buffs sets up a matchup between two 6-2 squads this coming Friday-Sunday for potentially the outright lead in the Lone Star Conference as 13-8 (6-2 LSC) Angelo State visits the Buffs for a four game series.  First pitch Friday is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Wilder Park.

WT battled back from a 4-2 deficit in the first game Monday with two runs in the seventh and the eventual game winning run in the eighth and then posted four runs in the top of the first of the nightcap en route to the sweep.

West Texas A&M 5, Cameron 4 (Game One)
In the opener, the Aggies got on the board first in the bottom of the first with two away as Brandon Wright singled to right center and Tyler Cook singled up the middle on a 3-2 count to keep the inning alive.  From there, Cameron hit back-to-back RBI singles down each line for a 2-0 lead.

WT tied the game in the top of the third as senior Jake Fuller reached on an error to begin the frame and senior Mason Shiflett doubled to center.  A passed ball by CU hurler Javarias Banks plated the first run and a RBI ground out by junior Troy LaBrie plated the second.

The Buffs had a good scoring chance thwarted in the fifth as redshirt freshman Christian Loya began the inning with a double down the left field line, but Banks picked him off at second to end the threat.  In Cameron's half of the fifth, a pair of infield singles began the frame, followed by a sacrifice bunt and intentional walk loaded the bases.  Following a pitching change by the Buffs, as junior Thomas Garland relieved senior starter Luke Wiechec, Bronson Pulgados hit a single to left plating two runs for a 4-2 lead.  Pinch-runner Colton Adams was gunned down at third for the second out and a foul out to third ended the frame.

Down to their last at bat, the Buffs got a leadoff single from junior John Baiada as Logan Fanning replaced Banks to try and close out the game.  A passed ball moved Baiada to second and Loya singled him home for a 4-3 score.  Fuller then singled to left for two on with one away.  The second passed ball of the inning moved the runners to second and third.  A RBI ground out by Shiflett tied the game at four as the bottom half of the order came up big for the Buffs in the final frame to tie the game.

The Aggies had 2-4 up in their half of the seventh.  Garland got Tyler McKenzie, but a miscue by the Buffs put the winning run at second with one away.  Garland then got the second out with a fly out to center and got out of the jam with a ground out to second sending the game to extra-innings.

Fanning, who blew the save opportunity, was replaced by Matt Glasmann in the top of the eighth.  Glasmann held the Buffs to just one hit with three walks and three strikeouts over the final 3.2 innings yesterday in Cameron's 6-3, come-from-behind win in the nightcap of the doubleheader to earn his third win of the season (3-0).

Leadoff, redshirt freshman Blake Weaver began the top of the eighth with a bunt single on the first pitch putting the go ahead run at first.  A sacrifice bunt from senior Matt Cole moved Weaver to second.  A ground out by senior Trace Hansen moved Weaver to third, but with two away as the Buffs stranded what would have been the winning run at third in the top of the seventh an inning ago.  This time, however, the Buffs would cash in as Baiada doubled home Weaver for a 5-4 score.  Monday's doubleheader was the first two starts of Weaver's career for the Buffs at center field.

In the bottom of the eighth, Garland retired the Aggies in order for the win as he improved to 1-0 at a Buff.  WT had five runs on eight hits with one error, while Cameron had four runs on seven hits with one error.  Garland pitched the final 3.2 innings, allowing one hit, one walk and fanning three.  Glasmann (3-1) took the loss in one inning, allowing one earned run and he fanned one.

Baiada was 2 for 4 with a run scored and the game winning RBI.  Loya was 2 for 3 with a run scored and a RBI.  WT belted four doubles in the game.  Cameron was led by Pulgados who was 2 for 4 with three RBI.

West Texas A&M 10, Cameron 0 (Game Two)
A walk by Weaver began the second game for the Buffs as he advanced to second on the miscue.  Cole doubled him home for a 1-0 lead.  Jackson Tetreault, a freshman, starting his first collegiate game, walked Hansen for two on with nobody out.  Baiada reached on an error by Tetreault plating two runs for a 3-0 lead.  A sacrifice fly from Loya plated Baiada for a 4-0 advantage.

Cameron put runners at the corners with one away in the bottom of the first off WT starter Joshua Payne.  Tyler Cook grounded into a double play to end the threat for the Aggies.  With two away in the bottom of the third, Cameron put two on courtesy of an error and an infield single.  It was the third-straight inning of having people on base for the Aggies.  Payne came up with a huge strikeout on a 2-2 count of Cook to get out of the jam once again.

WT added three runs in the top of the fourth as LaBrie singled up the middle to begin the frame and Weaver put down his second bunt single of the day, followed by a Cole, two RBI double to center.  Hansen later fouled down the first base line scoring the third run of the inning.  Blake Welch relieved Tetreault following the Cole double.

The Buffs added two more in the fifth and one in the sixth for a 10-0 lead.  The two runs in the fifth were scored on an error and a passed ball and the run in the sixth was courtesy of a RBI single to left from Loya.

Cameron put runners at the corners with two away in the bottom of the sixth.  Payne once again got out of the jam preserving the shutout with a fielder's choice to end the inning.  It was the eighth batter left on base for the Aggies in the game.

Payne retired the Aggies in order in the seventh for the win as he improved to 2-1 on the year, dropping his ERA from 13.17 to 8.71.  It was his first complete game shutout of his WT career and the fourth shutout of the season for WT.  Payne allowed seven hits with one walk and he fanned four in 97 pitches.  Tetreault took the loss (1-1), going 3.1 innings, allowing five hits, seven runs – four earned, walked three and struck out one.  Of the ten runs scored, five were unearned.
