No. 19 West Texas A&M Clips Oklahoma Christian 6-1 in Series Opener Friday Evening

CANYON, Texas – The #19 West Texas A&M baseball team extended its winning streak to seven games with a 6-1 victory over Oklahoma Christian Friday evening at Wilder Park in the first of three games over the weekend.  The Buffs improved to 10-2 on the year, while OC fell to 5-7.  The teams are scheduled for a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 12 p.m.
 
WT senior Austin Moore (2-1) earned the win for the Buffs going six innings, allowing one earned run with one walk and he fanned four.  Senior Kyle Tinius picked up his third save of the season going the final three innings, allowing one hit with two strikeouts. 
 
The Buffs belted six runs on eight hits and one error, while OC had one run on seven hits with one error.  Senior Matt Cole was 3 for 3 with two runs scored, a double and one RBI, while four other Buffs had one hit each.  OC was led by Robert Rosser who went 2 for 4 with a RBI and a run scored on a home run.  Buff redshirt freshman Christian Loya hit his first home run of his career going 1 for 4 with a RBI and a run scored.
 
The Eagles put two on with a single up the middle and a walk with two away in the top of the first off Moore.  Moore got a fielder's choice to end the threat.  WT began the bottom of the inning as senior Trace Hansen got plunked with the Bradley Horn offering and Cole walked  followed by senior Nick Chapman drawing an eight-pitch walk to load the bases.  Senior Josh Day was hit by the pitch plating Hansen for a 1-0 lead.  OC made a call to the bullpen in favor of Garett Hill. 
 
Horn transferred to Oklahoma Christian this season from University of Dayton.  WT senior Aaron De La Paz hit a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead.  Hill got a strikeout and a fly out to end the inning.  Horn had 20 pitches allowing two earned runs, walked two and hit two without retiring a Buff.
 
An infield single and an error on a failed pickoff attempt at first moved Doug Jones to third with one out in the top of the third.  Loya threw out Jones at home on a grounder to first to preserve the 2-0 lead.  A strikeout passed ball put two on with two away in the inning.  Moore got out of the jam with a fielder's choice out to third.
 
Loya, in his second career start, hit a one out home run over the Green Monster in left field in the bottom of the fourth for a 3-0 lead.
 
Jared Sterling hit a one-out triple to right in the top of the fifth for the Eagles.  The three-bagger broke up a string of eight consecutive Eagles retired by Moore.  Moore got a strikeout and a ground out to second leaving Sterling stranded at third.
 
A two out rally for the Buffs in the bottom of the fifth extended the lead as Cole singled through the right side and advanced to second on a wild pitch.  Chapman singled him home with a single through the right side for a 4-0 lead.
 
Rosser hit a home run to left to begin the top of the sixth for his second round tripper of the year on a 1-2 count.  WT had a mound visit with two on in the top of the sixth as the bullpen got loose.   Moore got Austin Orth to look at strike three to end the frame.  It was Moore's fourth strikeout of the game.
 
Tinius relieved Moore in the top of the seventh as Moore went six innings, allowing six hits, one earned run, one walk and four strikeouts in 92 pitches.  Tinius retired the Eagles as Shiflett began the bottom of the seventh with a double to left.   Junior John Baiada put down a great sacrifice bunt and an error plated Shiflett for a 5-1 lead as Baiada reached second on the miscue.  Hansen hit a sacrifice bunt moving Baiada to third.  Cole doubled to right and was thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple.
