Three Unanswered Goals and a New Facility Attendance Record Highlight a 4-1 Victory over ENMU

CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M freshman Marlene van Mourik scored two goals in front of a record crowd on Wednesday night as the Lady Buffs scored three goals in the second half and never looked back in a 4-1 win over rival Eastern New Mexico in front of a facility record crowd of 593 fans. With the win, WT improves to 4-3-0 (3-2-0) while the Greyhounds fall to 3-6-1 (2-3-0).

"I first off want to thank everyone who came out tonight and supported the girls," WT head women's soccer coach Chad Webb said. "The atmosphere that they created really helped us in the second half especially after they equalized. I feel that the second half was one of more complete offensive performances of the season. I contribute that to the adjustments we made at half time and the execution by the players."

Ronni Ajeto scored her fourth of the season at 2:44 in the first half to give the Lady Buffs an early 1-0 lead for the second consecutive match. Peyton Williams found a wide open Ajeto on the right side just inside the penalty box. The freshman forward did well to handle the cross before placing the ball in the far post beating ENMU's Marrissa Torres.

The Lady Buffs finished the first half with nine shots compared to ENMU's two.

The Greyhounds tied the match at 49:30 when Erin McAnamey scored her first goal of the season on a defensive mistake by the Lady Buffs backline. WT responded quickly as they retook the lead at 52:23 on a header from junior Peyton Williams. Kaitlin Steele picked up her first assist of the season after MacKenzie Taylor earned a free kick 30 yards from goal. Steele perfectly placed the ball where only Williams could get it at as the Pflugerville, Texas native headed home the eventual game-winner.

The Lady Buffs added a brace a minute later when Brady Prescott laid off a ball to a wide open van Mourik inside the six-yard box after making a long run from the right side. The Hovborg, Denmark native made the most of Prescott's long run as she one touched the ball into the upper 90 sending the crowd into the frenzy.

WT's defense continued to stifle the Greyhounds even after they committed more players to the attack. The Lady Buffs eventually added a fourth in the 85th minute when van Mourik pounced on a rebound in front of the net. Senior Karyn Forbes started the whole sequence finding space down the right side before feeding a near perfect ball into Katelyn Taschler who saw her point black shot saved and deflect right in front of van Mourik.

The Lady Buffs finished the match with an 18-8 advantage in shots with nine of those being on target.

Sophomore goalkeeper Courtney Dippel returned in goal for WT as she made six saves to pick up her fourth win of the season.

The Lady Buffs will face-off against Midwestern State in a Highway 287 Challenge matchup on Friday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. in Wichita Falls. Live stats and video for Friday's match can be found at GoBuffsGo.com under the women's soccer schedule.
