Debesette’s Golden Goal Powers Lady Buffs over #21 Texas A&M-Commerce

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The West Texas A&M women's soccer team extended its season-high  win streak to six matches with a 2-1 overtime victory over #21 Texas A&M-Commerce in front of 315 fans on Friday night at The Pitch. Khadisha Debesette scored the golden goal just three minutes into the first overtime as both teams scored goals in the final five minutes of regulation to send the match to extra time. With the win, the Lady Buffs improved to 9-4-0 and moved into a first place tie with TAMUC in the Lone Star standings at 7-2-0.

"I think this was the most complete match that we have played so far this season," said WT women's soccer head coach Chad Webb. "This win shows a lot about this team and what they are becoming. Some teams would have been alright salvaging a draw after allowing a late goal but the girls kept their head up and got a quick winner. The crowd created a great environment for the game tonight and I want to thank all those who came out and supported us."

Ronni Ajeto had the Lady Buffs chance in the first half at 9:53 after she got possession of the ball after TAMUC was unable to clear a Marlene van Mourik corner kick. The Henderson, Nevada native saw her shot from pointblank range was saved by TAMUC's goalkeeper Caitlin Duty before her follow up shot was blocked out of danger. The Lady Buffs had another just 30 seconds later at 10:30 but Dom Premac was unable to possess a long ball from Kaitlin Steele before Duty came off her line to grab the ball

WT outshot the Lions 9-3 in the first half while taking seven corner kicks.

Katelyn Taschler was a force in the second half as the Lions had a hard time containing the right back. The Colony, Texas native spread the TAMUC defense thin at 58:40 after disposing her defender and racing down the field before sending her shot over the crossbar.

The junior had another chance less than three minutes later when she latched onto a loose ball on the right side. She found herself one-on-one with the keeper after beating the defender but was unable to convert as her shot went straight at Duty.

The Lady Buffs finally went ahead at 86:40 on a Karyn Forbes' free kick from the right side after freshman MacKenzie Taylor was taken down by two TAMUC defenders. Forbes blasted the ball over the mixer and out of Duty's reach into the upper 90 of the left side of the net for her first goal of the season.

WT's lead was short lived as the Lions found an equalizer thanks to a header from Michelle Kotlik at 88:36. The freshman rose over her defender to get her head on Sophie Haywood's cross to the back post to tie the match at 1-1.

The Lady Buffs didn't have to wait long into the first overtime before scoring the game-winner as Debesette was in the right place at the right time to head home van Mourik's corner at 93:49. The sophomore center back scored her second game-winner in three matches as she was left all alone on the left side just inside the penalty area and had no problem depositing the ball into the back of the net as her teammates rushed the field.

The Lady Buffs finished the match with 16 shots compared to the Lions six. They also took a season-high 10 corner kicks.
