Season Stats

PORTALES, N.M. – With a 3-2 count in the top of the seventh and two out, West Texas A&M senior Max Brennen came up with a two triple to left field and senior Johnny Gaines belted a RBI single for a 10-8 victory in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday at Eastern New Mexico.  With the win, WT improved to 25-13 on the year and 16-9 in Lone Star Conference play, while ENMU fell to 11-22 and 7-15 in league play.

For the game, the Buffs were led by junior Josh Day who went 3 for 3 with four runs scored and one RBI.  Brennen was 2 for 3 with a run scored and three RBI including the go ahead RBI triple which was the first triple of the season for him and the first three-bagger of his career.

Senior Paul Lujan, who tied his own school-record with his ninth save of the season last night in the Buffs' 2-1 victory, pitched the final 1.2 innings, allowing one hit with one strikeout to earn the win as WT used five pitchers in the contest.  The Buffs scored the winning run in last night's game in their last at bat, too.

The Greyhounds were led by Blake Cooper who went 2 for 4 with two RBI and a run scored, while Chris Sanders went 4 for 4 with three runs scored and two RBI.  Dylan Montano (1-3) took the loss working 0.2 innings, allowing two hits, three earned runs, with one walk as he came into the game in the seventh looking for his first save of the season.

ENMU opened the game with a single run in the bottom of the first as three singles scored the run for an early 1-0 lead.  WT tied the game in the top of the second with two out as junior Josh Day began the frame with an infield single and scored on a junior Jace Reese single to center for a 1-1 score.

The Greyhounds scored four times in the bottom of the inning for a 5-1 lead highlighted by a two RBI, infield single and a two RBI double to left by Blake Cooper.

WT came back with two runs in the fourth as senior Jacob Caples doubled home Day who again began the frame with a single and Brennen doubled home Caples for a 5-3 deficit.  The Buffs then took the lead in the fifth with a junior Trace Hansen RBI single and a bunt single from Day scored a run off an error.  Caples tallied a RBI and senior Aaron Blair singled home the fourth run of the inning for a 7-5 lead.

ENMU cut the deficit to 7-6 in the bottom of the inning on a two out RBI single from Keenan Dodd.  The Greyhounds then took the lead once again in the sixth courtesy of a miscue by the Buffs as Justin Paul singled to left with another error plating two runs for an 8-7 lead leading to the last-inning heroics by the Buffs.

The series is set for the second game of the doubleheader to finish the season series as WT will be going for its sixth win against the Greyhounds this season (5-1).
