Box ScoreSeason StatsPostgame InterviewALLEN, Texas – The top-seeded West Texas A&M women's basketball team ran its winning streak to 16 games with an 87-46 victory over No. 8-seed Angelo State Wednesday evening in the quarterfinal round of the 2015 Lone Star Conference championship. With the win, WT improved to 25-2 on the year, while ASU ended its season 9-18.
"I thought we were pretty focused tonight," head coach
Mark Kellogg said. "That was Lady Buff basketball tonight and I thought we controlled it from the beginning through the end. We shot the ball really well and moved it around. "
Early in the second half, WT senior
Chontiquah White set the school record with 875 rebounds on an offensive rebound surpassing Brandi Green (1997-2001) who had 874 rebounds. White finished the game with 11 points on 3 of 8 from the field with a triple and 4 of 7 from the line. She tied for the team-lead with six rebounds as she now has 878 for her career.
"I think it means a lot to me and the program with this record," White said. "It shows the hard work and time to get to that status in the record book and I think I have shown that during my four years at WT. I am honored to be on the list with some of the best players in program history."
Four starters were in double figures as junior
Madison McLain led the way with 12 points on 5 of 8 from the field and two triples. Senior
Ariel Robertson had 11 points on 5 of 9 from the field, while sophomore
Sasha Watson had 10 points and five assists and junior
Michaela Neuhaus had 10 points off the bench on 4 of 5 with two triples.
WT shot a 54.8 percent for the game on 34 of 62. It was 8 of 19 from beyond the arc, but uncharacteristically struggled from the line going just 11 of 22. The Lady Buffs won the battle of the boards 41-31 and lead 40-14 in points in the paint.
ASU had one player in double figures led by 13 points from Michelle Rosewell. She was 4 of 8 from the field with two triples and 3 of 6 from the line. ASU shot 27.7 percent for the game which was a season-low for WT. The Rambelles were 5 of 15 from beyond the arc and 15 of 21 from the line.
Junior
Danielle Logan was intentionally fouled by Michelle Rosewell on a steal by sophomore
Sasha Watson just 40 seconds into the contest as Logan hit both free throws for a 2-0 lead. Logan was all over the court Wednesday deflecting passes and had a team-high four steals tying her career-high.
Watson buried a triple for a 7-4 lead with 17:16 left and took a charge at the other end and a second charging foul on the Rambelles marked the fifth ASU miscue four minutes into the contest. Watson scored inside for a 9-4 lead with 16:23 left in the first half and then scored her seventh point of the game for an 11-4 lead and a 7-0 run with 15:43 left.
Keanna Kelly scored a triple and earned the "and one" out of a media time out for an 11-8 WT lead with 15:24 left in the half. McLain buried a triple at the other end for a 14-8 lead. McLain scored her second bucket for a 16-8 lead.
Senior
Jordan Vessels buried the Lady Buffs' third triple of the half for a 21-11 lead for the largest of the half with 11:35 left as the Lady Buffs made 5 of their last seven field goals. Vessels hit her second triple for a 24-11 lead and a timeout by the Rambelles extending the run to 13-3 over the last 4:06.
McLain hit her second triple for a 27-13 lead and a 16-5 run, followed by another bucket from McLain for a 29-13 lead with 9:46 left making McLain the first player for either team in double figures with 10 points.
WT pulled away in the final 10 minutes of the first half holding ASU to just 11 points over the final 15:24 and just three made field goals.
At the half, WT shot 60 percent from the field on 18 of 30. The Lady Buffs were 5 of 10 from beyond the arc and 3 of 6 from the line. McLain and Watson each had 10 points with going a combined 8 of 10 from the field with a combined three triples. It was the fourth time this season WT has shot 60 percent or better from the field in the first half and second consecutive game.
ASU was 6 of 21 from the field for 28.6 percent. The Rambelles buried two triples and were 5 of 7 from the line.
WT forced 12 turnovers and led 11-8 in points off turnovers and dominated the glass 21-10, including 8-0 in second chance points with five offensive rebounds.
The Lady Buffs opened the second half on a 13-4 run for a 57-23 lead through the first four minutes. During that stretch, White tallied two rebounds for the record.
From there, WT held ASU without a field goal for 10 minutes and cruised to the 87-46 victory.
WT improve to a conference-best 45-15 all-time in the LSC Championship and now will await the winner of the No. 4/5 matchup between Tarleton State and Texas Woman's. The Lady Buffs will play the winner Friday at 6 p.m. for a berth in Saturday's championship game.

- It marked the fourth time this season that WT has allowed less than 20 points in a half this season and second against Angelo State
- The Lady Buffs have allowed les s than 20 points in three first halves this season (Midwestern State, 13) and Tarleton State (19)
- WT shot 60 percent from the field in the first half marking the fourth time this season of doing that
- Senior Chontiquah White tallied two rebounds early in the second half breaking the school-record of 874 rebounds set by Brandi Green (1997-2001) with White's 875th rebound with 17:45 left in the game
- ASU entered leading the conference in 3-point field goal defense at a .296 clip, WT shot 8 of 19 for 42.1 percent.
- The Rambelles also were third in field goal defense, WT shot 54.8 percent for the game
- Lady Buffs had five players in double figures and didn't trail in the game marking the seventh game of not trailing this season
