Bayer Tosses a Three Hit Shutout as #1 Lady Buffs Rout Mavericks, 8-0

TUCSON, Arizona – West Texas A&M junior right hander Tori Bayer had one of the best starts of her career on Saturday night as the Floresville native tossed a three hit shutout to lift the #1 Lady Buffs to an 8-0 run-rule victory over Colorado Mesa in six innings. The Lady Buffs move to 3-0 overall while the Mavericks fall to 2-2 on the season.

The Lady Buffs wasted no time scoring as they used a Renee Erwin RBI double to the left center field gap to drive in Stacey Ramirez who had walked the batter before with one out, Erwin moved up 60 feet on the next pitch via the passed ball followed by a Kaisha Dacosin sac fly to deep center field to give WT the early 2-0 lead.

WT added to their lead in the bottom of the third inning as Tyler Wilkinson led off the inning with a single to left field followed by a Ramirez infield single with no outs, a Mavericks wild pitched moved the runners up followed by an Erwin two RBI single up the middle to extend the lead to 4-0.

Lady Buff starter Tori Bayer was dominant early as the junior allowed just one hit thru four innings of play, the WT offense helped her cause in the bottom of the fourth inning as Brittany Gehle singled home Allie Cranfill from second base with an RBI rip to center field followed two batters later by a Ramirez hot shot single to third base to run the WT lead to 6-0 headed to the bottom of the fourth.

West Texas A&M would add to their lead in the bottom of the fifth inning as Gehle lofted a blooper to behind first base with the bases loaded that CMU's second baseman was unable to handle as pinch-runner Morgan Harrison crossed the plate to stretch the lead to 7-0 headed to the bottom of the sixth. The bottom of the sixth saw the Lady Buffs end the game via the run-rule as Ramirez and Erwin reached base with no outs before Dacosin ended the game with an RBI single to left field for the 8-0 win.

Bayer picked up the win (1-0) in the circle for the Lady Buffs, giving up no runs on three hits with one walks and one strikeout in the complete game shutout, the win lifts the Floresville native to a tie for 8th place all-time in the WT record books in career wins with 13 (Lauren Heinrich, Lindsey Wright).

The Lady Buffs advance to tomorrow's Gold Bracket semifinals at 11:00 a.m. CT against the #16 Rattlers of St. Mary's in a rematch of last year's South Central Super Regionals. The Rattlers (4-0) topped #4 Southeastern Oklahoma State, 9-3 earlier in the day to advance to the semifinals while the other semi features #3 Dixie State and Central Oklahoma.
