CANYON, Texas – The West Texas A&M men's soccer team saw their six match winning streak come to an end on Saturday night at The Pitch against Fort Hays State, 2-1, in double overtime. For the second time this season, the Tigers scored in the second overtime period to defeat the Buffs. Tom Cowling scored his third of the season in the loss for WT.

"Obviously we are disappointed with the result," head coach Butch Lauffer said. "I am proud of how the team responded after going down a goal in the second half. But we needed to put them away while we had the momentum behind us."

FHSU was the aggressor early on in the match forcing Patrick Satorie to make two saves in the first 10 minutes. The Tigers came close to gaining an early advantage but Anthony Hernadez's header bounced off the cross bar. WT's best chance came in the 28th when Shane Dockery found space outside but his shot went over the goal. The teams were even on shots, 5-5, while FHSU held a 3-1 advantage in corners in the first 45 minutes of play.

But teams opened the second half looking to take the lead but FHUS struck first in the 55th minute. The Buffs were caught out of position on a counter attack as Mauricio Castorino found a streaking Maurizio Costa steaking down the right side. After a quality first touch, Castorino tapped the ball far post for his seventh of the season. The Buffs nearly equalized just two minutes later but Michael Yantz controlled Jake Wiffen's shot. The Buffs found pay dirt in the 68th minute when Cowling rose above his defender to get on the end of Fraser Barlow's cross. Anthony Hernandez nearly put the Tigers ahead in the 84th minute but Satorie came out of his goal to make the save. Chris Johnson nearly stole the match for the Buffs in the final minute but his shot from 35 yards sailed high.
Both teams struggled to find any rhythm on offense in the first period of overtime as neither mustered a shot on goal. Near the end of the period, both teams had players go down in the box but the referee waived play on.

FHSU made the most of their opportunities in the second overtime period. The Tigers earned back-to-back corners before David Lucio headed in the game winner off Castorino's corner in the 102nd minute.
