CANYON, Texas – Not even the rain could stop the West Texas A&M men's soccer team from picking up their six consecutive win on Wednesday night at The Pitch as they defeated Eastern New Mexico, 2-1. The Buffs were led by goals from
Thomas Vickers and
Jake Wiffen. With the win, the Buffs clinched their 23
rd consecutive winning season and longest win streak since 2009.
"It seems to be a trend for us that we are able to score a quick goal at the first of the match," head coach
Butch Lauffer said. "If you look at the stats, we score a lot of early goals but Eastern played really well in the first half. I thought our players responded really well after Eastern tied the match. Whenever we play them it's going to be a battle and tonight was no different. We beat them twice this year, I will take it."
WT had a dream start when
Chris Johnson was fouled 35 yards away from goal.
Ivan Ulloa's free kick found
Thomas Vickers in the box who headed it into the top corner. It was Vickers's second goal of the season. The Buffs continued to pressure as both Wiffen and
Chris Johnson troubled goalkeeper James Gutierrez.
Patrick Satorie was forced to make his first save of the match in the 40
th minute on a strike from Carlos Viveros.
Tom Cowling nearly doubled the Buffs lead right before half time but his header off
Austin Henderson's corner was stopped by Gutierrez.
After earning back-to-back corners, ENMU tied the match when Ryan McManus's free kick found an open Cesar Quintero in the box. But the tie wouldn't last long as Wiffen put the Buffs back on top in the 56
th minute when his shot from the top of the box found the back of the net. The Greyhounds pushed forward looking for an equalizer but Satorie denied both McManus and Viveros in the latter stages of the match. Wiffen nearly added to his highlight reel in the 83
rd minute when his shot from midfield went off the cross bar. Just two minutes later, Wiffen forced another Gutierrez save before ENMU countered but were denied by Satorie once more.
TURNING POINTAfter allowing an equalizer in the 55
