Lady Buff Game Notes

CANYON, Texas – After rescheduling early this afternoon due to inclement weather in Plainview, the West Texas A&M women's soccer team hosted Wayland Baptist at The Pitch on Thursday evening. The Lady Buffs earned their second-straight victory with the 4-0 win over the Pioneers. They now improve their record to 2-3. With the loss, the Pioneers fall to 0-6-1.

The Lady Buffs had their best chance early on Thursday evening which came in the 10th minute as sophomore Karyn Forbes sent a long pass from the midfield line. The pass nearly found junior Emily Krenek in front of the entire Pioneer backline but WBU keeper Bailey Stengler pressed forward out of the box before she could gather a shot.

WBU nearly responded with a similar chance as Heather Terbush broke free on a run but was whistled late offsides. Then in the 17th minute, senior Jessie Thomas nearly placed an attempt in from the far right wing for WT but the shot curved slightly over the crossbar.

Belgrave then put the Lady Buffs on top in the 27th minute with her second goal of the season. The Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago, native, took the free kick from about 27 yards outside the box on the left wing, beating Stengler for the 1-0 advantage for the home team.

WT dominated on the stat sheet through the first 45 minutes of play, outshooting WBU 10-1 while seven of those attempts were on target. Leading the way for the home team were junior Haley Girard with four and Thomas with two. Forbes, Krenek, Belgrave and Rachel Herring had one attempt each. WT also held the early advantage in corner kick opportunities, 3-0.

It was a quiet first 10 minutes to start the second frame at The Pitch while during that stretch, the Pioneers were able to grab their first shot-on-goal, ending with a save by WT freshman keeper McKynzie Zick. Then in the 55th minute, Krenek would find the net for her third score of the season. Forbes would send a long strike in from 30 yards outside the center of the box which bounced off the chest of Stengler. Krenek timed it perfectly trailing in for the easy chip-in. All three of Krenek's goals this season have been assisted by Forbes.

The Pioneers were able to generate a few more chances over the next 15 minutes with shot attempts by Haley Reiser and Tori Nimtz. However, both attempts would sail wide of the net.

Junior Dominique Premac would then get a great look in the 77th minute as she attempted to boot one in off a cross in the center of the box but her shot went high. Less than a minute later, freshman Lucy Chalgren would send a strike in from the top of the box but Stengler stepped in for the stop.

The Lady Buffs doubled their lead late in the final six minutes of the match. At the 84:40 mark, junior Taylor Laubhan took a corner on the left side and the ball took a bounce in front of the box. Players from each team attempted to get ahold of it before sophomore Ashlee Craig found the net for her first career score as a Lady Buff.

Premac would then add to the lead in the final minute of play for her first score of the season, making the final decision 4-0.

The Lady Buffs held the final advantage in shots 16-4, and shots-on-goal, 11-1. Girard finished with four while Premac put up three attempts. Zick grabbed her second win of the season and her WT career as she picked up one save.

WT will return to action this Saturday, Sept. 20, as it hosts Dallas Baptist of the Heartland Conference. Kickoff is scheduled for Noon. Live stats and a free video webstream will be available courtesy of West Texas A&M Athletic Media Relations. Links can be found at the top of the page.

DALLAS BAPTIST AT A GLANCE: DBU has looked impressive to begin the 2014 fall season. The Patriots currently own a 2-2-1 record after facing some very tough opponents. They opened up the season with a 1-1 tie at then-No. 9 Colorado Mines before receiving their only loss thus far at then-No.16 Metro State, 2-1. DBU then picked up back-to-back wins at home over RMAC opponents, defeating Colorado Mesa, 2-0, and Fort Lewis, 1-0. Then on Tuesday, they fell at home to LSC member Texas A&M-Commerce, 2-1.

Ashley Cox has been the leading Patriot on the field offensively as she has tallied two goals, including one game-winner, four points, and 17 shots, all team-highs. Lea Sedwick, Emilie MacDonald, and Jolee Patterson have also contributed one goal each. Kerry Edwards has seen the start in all four matches thus far. She holds a .71 GAA, .857 save percentage, only allowing three goals, and has tallied and 18 saves and two shutouts.

Michelle Lenard returns for her seventh season at the helm of the DBU women's soccer program. She holds a career record of 85-49-6. The Patriots compete in the Heartland Conference.

The Patriots had a successful season in 2013, going 17-7-1 while reaching the NCCAA Nationals. The Lady Buffs are tied with the Patriots in the all-time series, 3-3. WT's last meeting was a 1-0 overtime loss in Dallas on Sept. 14, 2013.
