Box Score Season Statistics CANYON, Texas – The West Texas A&M women's soccer team dropped a tough decision at The Pitch in Canyon, Texas on Saturday afternoon as they fell 1-0 to Dallas Baptist. The Lady Buffs surrendered an early second half goal in a contest where chances were few and far between for the home team. With the loss, the Lady Buffs fall to 2-4 on the season while the Patriots improve to 3-2-1
The few chances that WT would have in the first half of Saturday afternoon's contest came early. Sophomore
Marissa Naab took a couple of quick corners for the Lady Buffs in the 3
rd and 8
th minutes. Her second opportunity was a very well-played ball that led to a great scoring chance for junior
Haley Girard. Her shot would sail right into the hands of DBU keeper Kerry Edwards.
The Patriots would respond with their first shot-on-goal in the 14
th minute. Emilie MacDonald took the attempt which was stopped by WT's starting goalie, freshman
McKynzie Zick, as she picked up her first save of the afternoon.
Much of the first half was played in the midfield, while neither team could find much offensive rhythm. The Patriots would finally get a few more chances past the 32
nd minute. In the 33
rd and 34
th minutes, the visitors were able to force a couple more attempts on target from Lindsey Eccles and Annie Wells. Zick would make the stop on both occasions.
At the 43:04 mark, the Lady Buffs would gather one more shot attempt before the break. Freshman
Lucy Chalgren sent a strike from the far right wing, making Edwards extend out for the save.
After the first 45 minutes of action, the Patriots led WT in shots, 5-2, while the Lady Buffs would only have one attempt from both Chalgren and Girard. Zick tallied three saves in that time.
Less than two minutes into the second half, the Patriots would find the deciding goal of the game. In a scramble near the top of the box, Annie Wells gathered the loose ball and beat Zick to give DBU the 1-0 advantage. It was her first goal of the season.
DBU would continue to pressure in the ensuing minutes, taking continuous corners from Ashley Cox. In the 49
th minute, Lea Sedwick nearly added to the score with a header but her attempt landed wide left. The Patriots would force four more shots before the 65
th minute, keeping the ball consistently in their attacking zone.
At the 70:10 mark, Zick would have to step up again for another tough save, stopping a shot by Jolee Patterson. Steele would get two opportunities for WT in the final 20 minutes but did not convert as her first shot was sent wide before Edwards stopped the second in the final minute.
The Lady Buffs were outshot on Saturday, 13-4, and shots-on-goal, 7-3. Zick took the loss for WT as her record drops to 2-4. She tallied six saves in the contest.
WT will return to action next Tuesday, Sept. 23, as it travels to Southwestern Oklahoma State for a midweek non-conference matchup. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. in Weatherford. The Lady Buffs are 14-0-1 all-time against the SWOSU. The last meeting between the two teams was a 1-1 draw on Sept. 12, 2013. Check back with
