Season Statistics

HAYS, Kan. – The West Texas A&M men's soccer team took a decision back from No. 22 Fort Hays State on Sunday afternoon, upsetting the Tigers 1-0 on the road. After a very poor first half showing, the Buffs rebounded in a strong second frame, grabbing a goal off a corner kick with just five minutes left to play. With the win, the Buffs improve to 9-6-1 on the season while the Tigers fall to 11-4-3 overall.

The Buffs finished the day trailing in total shots, 14-10; however outshot the Tigers 9-3 in the final 45 minutes of play. FHSU also held the advantages in shots-on-goal (7-5) and corner kicks (5-3). Leading the way for WT was freshman Brandon Bautista with five total attempts. Sophomore Patrick Satorie grabbed the win in goal and improves to 7-6-1 after making seven saves in his shutout this afternoon.

The Tigers would grab a couple of early shots to set the tone for the first half in Hays on Sunday afternoon. Both attempts would be sent wide by Michael Cole and Tanner Brock in the 2nd and 9th minutes, respectively.

FHSU would really put on the pressure starting in the 20th minute. Diego Cabral would grab the first shot-on-goal, forcing a Satorie save in the 21st minute. After a couple more attempts off target, Cole would force another save by Satorie in the 25th minute.

Finally in the 28th minute, the Buffs would get their first chance on-goal, a shot by freshman Alex Cervantes which was scooped up by FHSU keeper Kent Freund. The Tigers would grab five more shots along with two on-goal in the final 10 minutes of the match but were still unable to grab the lead after dominating time of possession in the first half.

The Tigers held a strong 11-1 shot advantage over the Buffs at the half. Four of those attempts were placed on target. Satorie would finish the first 45 minutes with four saves.

All five of Bautista's shots would come in the second frame, starting with back-to-back attempts in the 54th and 55th minutes. Much of the remainder of the half would stay quiet until the Buffs put on the pressure around the 77th minute.

Senior Michael Williams and sophomore Christian Suthers would send shots wide of the goal before Bautista sent one on target again in the 83rd minute. At the 84:25 mark, senior Vitor Cardoso forced a corner kick after his previous shot was saved and deflected out of bounds. Cardoso would take the corner as well which fell into traffic inside the box before deflecting off a Tiger defender and into the net, giving the Buffs the game-winner.

With the win today, the Buffs improve to 5-2-1 all-time against FHSU and split the season series this year, 1-1.
