Buffalo Soccer Game Notes

CANYON, Texas – The West Texas A&M men's soccer team suffered a tough loss on Wednesday night at The Pitch in Canyon, Texas at the hands of Eastern New Mexico, 1-0. After conceding a goal in the 40th minute, WT would be unable to create sufficient opportunities to get back into the game going 90 minutes with only two shots-on-goal. The Buffs now fall to 6-4 on the season with the loss while the Greyhounds improve to 4-5-2.

Wednesday's match marked the last of a six-game home stretch for the Buffs in which they went 3-3. The defeat also marks the first time in which WT has suffered back-to-back losses since closing out the 2012 season. The Buffs will now play six of their final seven games of the 2014 season on the road.

WT led ENMU in total shots in tonight's contest, 13-9, but would only place two attempts on target while the Greyhounds produced seven of their attempts on-goal. Sophomore keeper Patrick Satorie falls to .500 now with a 4-4 record after picking up six saves and allowing one goal Wednesday. ENMU keeper James Gutierrez grabbed the win and improves to 4-3-2 after completing the shutout with two saves.

The Buffs dominated possession for much of the first frame of action in Wednesday's contest at The Pitch. WT was able to force five corner kicks in the first 15 minutes of play, the set being taken by both juniors Johnny Oliver and Austin Henderson.

In between that stretch, the Greyhounds were able to generate the first shot-on-goal of the match, their only attempt in the first 30 minutes of play, in the ninth minute. John Jamison took the header right in front of the left post off a cross from the far wing but Satorie was in the perfect spot to scoop up the shot without much effort.

The best chance for the Buffs to take the lead came early shortly after in the 15th minute. Senior Chris Hutton took a cross dead center in the box from senior Michael Williams. Hutton would have a split second to put a foot on the ball with a chance to beat Gutierrez and took the chance, nearly grabbing a goal before the keeper dived out towards the right post for the sound save.

The Greyhounds would then grab the lead off a bizarre goal at the 39:26 mark. Jamison sent a strike in from 15 yards on the right side that appeared to be heading wide but proceeded to curve in to bounce off the right post past Satorie. The ball took a bounce seemingly parallel to the goal line before taking a quick spin into the left corner of the net just as it was heading past the left post. Jamison was assisted by Abayneh Crosby on what would be his second goal of the season.

WT would have one last chance at an equalizer in the half as freshman forward Axel Insulander received a high pass down the middle to the center of the box. The Stockholm, Sweeden, native, took the leap for the header but placed his attempt just high of the goal.

The Buffs would lead in shots heading into the break, 5-3; however, was only able to place one on target to the Greyhounds' three. Hutton and sophomore Chris Johnson had two attempts each after the first 45 minutes while Satorie picked up two saves.

Senior Vitor Cardoso grabbed a couple of quick shots early on in the second half as both shots were sent wide. ENMU responded quickly, nearly tapping another one in as Alexis Medina took a free kick from 25 yards out but Satorie stepped in for the stop on the ball sent straight through the middle.

At the 72:57 mark, Cardoso received another great chance for the Buffs to take the lead. The senior sent a long strike from the far left wing, attempting to curve inside the top right corner, but his shot was just off the mark, hitting the bottom of the crossbar and bouncing outside the 18-yard box for the Greyhounds to clear.

The Buffs would put up five more shots on the ENMU defense in the final 15 minutes. The first four would all sail wide while Cardoso placed one on target in the 89th minute; however, his shot this time would find the hands of Gutierrez, eliminating the final threat of the match.

With the loss tonight, the Buffs also fall to 13-6-2 all-time against the rival Greyhounds.
