Lady Buff Game Notes

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The West Texas A&M women's team dropped a close 2-1 contest to rival Midwestern State on Friday night in Wichita Falls, Texas. After trailing 2-0 in the second half, senior Jessie Thomas grabbed a goal to cut the lead to one with nearly 25 minutes remaining but the Lady Buffs' would be unable to find the equalizer. With the loss, WT falls to 6-9 and 2-5 in LSC play while the Mustangs improve to 8-3-5 (3-3-2, LSC).

WT held the advantage in shots on the night despite the loss, 14-11, while 11 of those attempts came in the second half. The Lady Buffs would only be able to place five of those attempts on target; however, compared to seven by MSU. Sophomore Nicole Kemper took the loss in goal and falls to 3-4 on the year after making five saves and allowing two goals. Courtney Burnette received the win with four stops and one goal allowed.

The Lady Buffs grabbed two of their three first-half shot attempts within the first nine minutes of play; however, were unable to generate any substantial length of possession in their attacking third of the field for the remainder of the half. Both of the opening attempts came off the feet of redshirt freshman Katelyn Taschler, a saved shot on-target just 30 seconds in followed by a blocked attempt in the ninth minute.

The Mustangs' first shot-on-goal attempt would not come until the 20th minute, a strike by LSC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year Ashley Cottrell which was scooped up by Kemper at the center of the goal line. MSU would also send their next two shots-on-goal quickly Kemper's way in the following five minutes but WT's sophomore keeper was able to make the stop on each occasion.

The Mustangs held the advantage in shots, 5-3, after the first 45 minutes of play and were able to place three of their attempts on target to WT's two.

Taschler once again was the one to watch at the beginning of the second frame as she sent a hard attempt into the crossbar just two minutes into the half. Freshman Lucy Chalgren followed just minutes later with an attempt a few inches high.

MSU would then grab the lead in the 60th minute as Callie Briseno found a rebound off of Morgan Hannon's previous shot to give the Mustangs the 1-0 lead. It would be Briseno's third score of the season.

Then in the 66th minute, Williamson extended the home team's advantage to 2-0 with her eight goal of the season on a double assist by Cottrell and Haley Britton.

Just over a minute later, senior Jessie Thomas tallied her fourth goal of the season to cut the Mustangs' lead to back to one in the 67th minute. But the Lady Buffs' late surge would not be enough as WT fell to MSU by a final score of 2-1.

With the loss, the Lady Buffs fall to 16-18-2 all-time against the Mustangs.
