Gary Newell enters his fourth season as a student assistant coach for the men's and women's track & field teams. He primarily works with the Buff and Lady Buff hurdlers.
During his time with the Buffs and Lady Buffs, Newell has coached four All-Americans and 10 top-three hurdle finishers in the Lone Star Conference, including four LSC champion hurdlers.
Newell graduated from Alamogordo High School in Alamogordo, N.M. He competed in the 110m hurdles, 300m hurdles and 4x4 relay events for the Tigers under head coach Henry Spillers. Newell was a member of the district champion 4x4 relay team, was district runner-up in the 300m hurdles and district second runner-up in the 110m hurdles. At the state level, he qualified for the 300m hurdles and earned fourth place in the medley relay. He was also a three-year letterwinner in football where he was named all-district honorable mention as a defensive end. Outside the playing field, Newell was the Senior Class President.
Born June 15. Gary is the son of Hazel Wilson and the late Jeffrey Newell. He has four brothers Mark, Scott, Jeffery and Eric. Newell is currently pursuing a degree in history at West Texas A&M.
