Junior College: Shands attended New Mexico JC (New Mexico) and pitched for the Thunderbirds under head coach Josh Simpson.

High School: Shands graduated from JJ Pearce HS (Texas) in 2006. He played first base, catcher, and pitched for the Mustangs under head coach Tim Benton and was named first team All-District.

Major: Shands is a Sports & Exercise Science major at West Texas A&M.

Personal: Shands is the son of James and Diane Shands and has two sibling, Conor and Chris.
