CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M had three different players shoot in the red on Tuesday as the Buffs finished tied for sixth at the San Juan Intercollegiate at The Bridges Golf 7 Country Club (Par 71 – 7,017 Yards) in Montrose, Colorado.
David Vega Gerstel put together an impressive performance for the Buffs as the sophomore carded rounds of 72, 64 and 68 for a 204 (-9) to finish tied for fifth overall. The Spain native registered 17 birdies over 54 holes with eight of them coming during Monday's second round on his way to a 64 (-7). Gerstel tied for the lowest par-five scoring average (4.17) in the 75-player field.
Carlos Fernández Mortera continued his strong start to the season with a 68 (-3) on Tuesday as the senior had four birdies along with an eagle on the 539-yard par-five first hole to finish tied for 21st with a 211 (-2). Kolby Stork also shot in the red for the Buffs in the final round as the sophomore had three birdies and an eagle of his own on the 509-yard ninth hole.
The Buffs finished with 56 birdies, three eagles and 157 pars on their way to a team total of 844 (-8) to finish tied for sixth on the team leaderboard. Colorado Christian shot rounds of 268, 273 and 276 for an 817 (-35) to win the team title by 14 strokes over host Colorado Mesa.
Bradley Mulder of CCU and Henry Starr of Colorado Mesa combined for 32 birdies as the pair of RMAC competitors tied for the individual championship with a -12 (201).
WT returns to the course on September 27-29 as they look to defend their team title at the Shootout at PGA Riviera Maya played at PGA Riviera Maya at Quintana Roo, Mexico.
