CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M's
David Vega Gerstel became the first men's golfer in school history to win the Lone Star Conference Individual Championship on Tuesday afternoon, claiming the victory on the first playoff hole at Rockwall Golf & Athletic Club (Par 72 – 7,320 Yards) in Rockwall, Texas.
The freshman from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain carded rounds of 71, 71 and 75 for a 217 (+1) as he finished three rounds with a tournament-best 13 birdies while also leading the field in par-four scoring (3.90). Vega Gerstel and Isaac Molloy of Cameron would tie at 217 (+1) to force a playoff with Vega Gerstel claiming the victory on the first hole.
The Buffs kept their LSC hopes alive with a team score of 897 (+33) to sit third on the leaderboard. UT Tyler led the way after 56-holes with a score of +26 (890) followed by Cameron (+30, 894), WT and Midwestern State (+35, 899).
WT will battle the second-seeded Cameron Aggies in Medal Match Play beginning with traditional tee times at 8:00 a.m. on the 10
thtee box.
