Buffs Split a Sunday Doubleheader on the Road in San Angelo

CANYON, Texas – The West Texas A&M Buffaloes split a Lone Star Conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon as they dropped the weekend series to the Angelo State Rams at Foster Field in San Angelo, Texas.
 
The Buffs close out their regular season home schedule next weekend as they host the Texas A&M International Dustdevils in a four-game series beginning on Friday afternoon at Wilder Park.
 
Game 1 – West Texas A&M 8, Angelo State 2
WT jumped out to an early lead in the postponed nightcap from last night as Brock Bunker started off the game with a first-pitch homerun to left center field for the 1-0 lead. The Buffs added to their lead in the top of the second on a Jonluke Hobdy RBI single to center that plated Luis Reyes followed by a Bunker two-run double down the left field line and a Tristin Thomas RBI single for the 5-0 lead.
 
The Rams responded in the home half of the second on a Brett Smajstria fielder's choice groundout that scored Payton Bush at 5-1. WT would add to their lead in the top of the fourth with a Hobdy sac fly that scored Daniel Castellanos followed by a Thomas RBI single to right to plate Tristan Menchaca at 7-1.
 
Angelo State would push across another run in the fourth with a Hunter Holt infield single to plate Austin Beck, WT responded with an insurance run in the top of the seventh on a Will Franklin sac fly with Thomas tagging up to make it 8-2.
 
Riley Kettner claimed the win (7-1) on the mound, allowing no runs on just one hit with no walks and two strikeouts in his 3.2 innings of relief.
 
Game 2 – Angelo State 15, West Texas A&M 10
Angelo State got on the board in the bottom of the second inning on a Tate Green triple to the gap in right center followed by a Holt sac fly at 3-0. WT answered with a pair of runs in the top of the third on an Anthony Picciano double down the left field line and a Bunker single to make it 3-2.
 
The Rams broke the game open in the home half of the third, scoring six runs highlighted by RBI singles from Beck, Greene and Jordan Kelly for the 10-3 advantage. The teams traded runs in the fourth before the Buffs got hot at the plate in the fifth with five runs as Hobdy and Jacob Police connected on homers at 10-8. 
 
The Buffs would continue their push with a Menchaca sac fly in the seventh and a wild pitch to plate Thomas in the eighth to tie the game at 10-10. Angelo State put the game away in the home half of the eighth with five runs to take the 15-10 win.
 
Teddy Judkins claimed the loss (0-1) for the Buffs, allowing three earned runs on two hits with two walks and four strikeouts in his 2.1 frames of relief.
