Long Ball Powers the #3 Lady Buffs Past Western New Mexico

CANYON, Texas – The #3 Lady Buffs connected on 11 homeruns on Friday with seven coming in the Lone Star Conference weekend opener as WT outscored the Western New Mexico Mustangs 41-12 in a doubleheader at The Yard in Silver City, New Mexico.
 
The 29 runs by the Lady Buffs in the nightcap marks the second highest run total in a single game in program history, trailing only a 33-0 shutout of Adams State back on January 31, 2025 in Los Lunas, New Mexico.
 
The Lady Buffs close out their LSC road trip on Sunday with a doubleheader in Alpine, Texas against the Sul Ross State Lobos beginning at Noon.
 
Game 1 – West Texas A&M 12, Western New Mexico 5
The Lady Buffs got on the board in the top of the second inning as Brooke Janning lifted a two-run homerun to center field followed later in the frame by a Bella Holland RBI single for the 3-0 lead. Jordyn De Los Santos added to the lead in the third with a solo shot to left for the 4-0 advantage.
 
WT added to their lead in the fourth with homeruns by Holland, Emily Liskai, Avery Cannon and Trinity Kuntz for the 10-0 lead. The Mustangs plated their first run in the home half of the fourth, taking advantage of a WT error at 10-1.
 
WNMU cut into the lead again in the bottom of the fifth on a Ciara Spencer two-run long ball to center followed later in the frame by a Marleigh Manns homer to make it 10-5. Cannon added to the WT lead in the top of the seventh with a two-run shot to center for the 12-5 win.
 
Janning picked up the win for the Lady Buffs, allowing no runs on three hits with no walks and seven strikeouts in her five innings of work.
 
Game 2 – West Texas A&M 29, Western New Mexico 7
The Lady Buffs wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning as De Los Santos connected on a solo shot to left center followed by a Cadence Colborn two-run homer to center. WT wasn't don't yet as Heaven Moreno drove in Kendall Luna De La Fuente followed by a Cannon two-run double for the 6-0 lead.
 
Western New Mexico responded with a Lanessa Morales two-run homer to right to make it 6-2. The Lady Buffs would plate three runs in the top of the second highlighted by a Kuntz RBI double for the 9-2 advantage. The Mustangs cut into the lead again in the bottom of the frame with three runs.
 
WT would blow the game open in the top of the third inning, scoring nine runs on seven hits highlighted by a Holland grand slam to right field for the 18-6 lead. The Lady Buffs added to their lead in the fourth, pushing across six more runs for the 24-6 advantage. WNMU cut into the lead in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single by Lauryn Carbajal at 24-7.
 
The Lady Buffs weren't done at the plate as Mya Chacon drove in Briley Daniels with an RBI single in the top of the fifth followed later in the inning by an Ava Sharp three-run homer to center for the 29-7 lead.
 
Laci Peskey picked up the win in the circle, allowing seven earned runs on nine hits with two walks and six strikeouts in her 4.0 innings of work.
