Buffs Roll Past Sul Ross State to Sweep the Series in Alpine

CANYON, Texas – The West Texas A&M Buffaloes finished off their third Lone Star Conference series sweep of the season on Sunday afternoon as they overpowered the Sul Ross State Lobos, 19-5 in a run-rule victory at Kokernot Field in Alpine, Texas.

West Texas A&M started strong in the first inning with Anthony Picciano getting hit by a pitch and Jake Alwine drawing a walk, setting the stage for Timothy Haynes to deliver a two-RBI double down the left field line, scoring both Picciano and Alwine. This gave the Buffs an early 2-0 lead. Sul Ross State failed to respond, leaving the score 2-0 at the end of the first inning.

In the second inning, the Buffs added two more runs. After Will Franklin walked and advanced on a fielder's choice, Picciano singled, allowing Tristin Hella to reach second. Jacob Police then singled to bring Hella home, followed by another RBI double from Haynes, scoring Picciano. The inning ended with the Buffs ahead 4-0.

Sul Ross State rallied in the fourth inning to tie the game at 5-5. The Buffs had secured a run with Alwine's RBI single, but Sul Ross State answered with multiple hits, including a two-RBI double by Adrian Garcia and a two-RBI single by Ethan Flores, bringing the game level.

The Buffs regained momentum in the sixth inning, scoring three runs. Picciano doubled and scored on a single by Daniel Castellanos. Luis Reyes and Jonluke Hobdy followed with RBI singles, extending the lead to 8-5.

The eighth inning saw an explosive performance from the Buffs, scoring 11 runs. The inning featured home runs by Haynes, Castellanos, and Tristin Thomas. The offensive outburst was supported by multiple hits and a fielding error by Sul Ross State for the 19-5 win.

Riley Kettner claimed the win (5-1) for the Buffs, allowing no runs on just two hits with no walks and six strikeouts in his 4.2 innings of relief.

The Buffs return to Wilder Park next weekend as they host the Oklahoma Christian Eagles in a four-game LSC series beginning on Friday afternoon in Canyon.
