Defense Propels the #7 Lady Buffs Past Angelo State, 69-62

CANYON, Texas – The #7 Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M held Angelo State scoreless over the final six and a half minutes of the game on Thursday night as they picked up a 69-62 Lone Star Conference at the First United Bank Center in Legacy Night in Canyon.
 
West Texas A&M started strong with Taylor Haggan scoring early in the paint. Kyla Kane added a 3-pointer at 8:09 with an assist from Taytum Bell, bringing the home team to a 5–0 advantage. The Lady Buffs maintained momentum with Henley West's jumper at 5:45, extending the lead to 9–4. Despite defensive efforts, including a block by West at 0:52, Angelo State gained the lead in the final minute for the 15-12 lead.
 
WT surged during the second quarter, capitalizing on strong performances in the paint and second-chance opportunities. The quarter began with ASU briefly taking the lead, but the Lady Buffs quickly responded with a layup and free throw by Kane. Randi Harding contributed significantly with a jumper and a pivotal 3-pointer at the 40-second mark, which helped shift momentum.
 
The Lady Buffs displayed effective teamwork, with five assists contributing to their scoring efforts. Kenadee Winfrey and Claire Graham executed a fast-break layup, while West tied the game with a tip-in at 2:44. Closing out the quarter, Harding hit a jumper at the buzzer, ensuring the Lady Buffs ended the quarter with a 38–33 lead.
 
WT started the third quarter strong, extending its lead through an effective offensive run. Kane's 3-pointer at 8:43, assisted by Harding, ignited the momentum which was followed by key contributions from Haggan and Bell. Angelo State responded with an aggressive comeback. Stevi Lockhart's 3-pointer at 5:08 was part of a run that narrowed the gap, culminating in a 54-49 lead for them. Graham managed to tie the game at 54 with a 3-pointer and a free throw with just over a minute left. Despite the rally, the Belles secured a 56-54 lead with two free throws from Taylor Grona in the final minute.
 
The Lady Buffs started the fourth quarter by taking the lead with a 3-pointer from Kane, assisted by Graham. The team maintained momentum with Bell scoring a layup, extending the lead to 59–56 early on. Following a brief tie after an Angelo State 3-pointer, Kane answered with another three to re-tie the game at 62–62.
 
As the quarter progressed, Harding hit a crucial 3-pointer, assisted by Graham, to put the Lady Buffs ahead 65–62. The team capitalized on strong defensive efforts, including blocks by Haggan and Kane, to maintain control. In the final moments, West Tex. A&M secured victory by converting free throws, resulting in a 69–62 win.
 
Kyla Kane led with 20 points, converting five of eight 3-point attempts and collecting nine rebounds. Randi Harding contributed 13 points, making five of seven shots from the field and adding two assists. Henley West recorded 11 points and blocked two shots while securing five rebounds. Kenadee Winfrey tallied three steals and provided three assists in the game.
 
The Lady Buffs close out the regular season on Saturday afternoon as the UT Permian Basin Falcons make their way to the First United Bank Center with tipoff set for 1:00 p.m. on Senior Day in Canyon.
