CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M put together their best pitching performance of the season on Friday afternoon as the Buffs claimed a 6-3 victory over the Cameron Aggies in the Lone Star Conference opener at Wilder Park in Canyon.
The Buffs got on the board in the home half of the first inning as
Jonluke Hobdy walked and advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt, eventually scoring on a throwing error.
Jacob Police, after being hit by a pitch, stole second and also scored on an error, giving the Buffs a 2-0 lead.
In the third inning, Police reached on a fielder's choice and stole second.
Daniel Castellanos hit an RBI single, bringing Police home and extending the lead to 3-0. The score was 3-0 after three innings.
Cameron responded in the fourth inning with two runs, but
Timothy Haynes hit a solo home run in the bottom half, maintaining the Buffs' lead at 4-2.
Cameron added another run in the sixth inning, narrowing the gap to 4-3. However, the Buffs expanded their lead in the eighth inning. Castellanos walked and later scored on
Anthony Picciano's two-RBI double, making it 6-3.
Cade Griffin picked up the win (3-0) for the Buffs, allowing three earned runs on seven hits with two walks and six strikeouts in his 6.0 innings of work.
Bryan Raitz claimed his first save, allowing just two hits with four strikeouts over the final three frames.
The Buffs and Aggies return to the field tomorrow for a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m. in Canyon.
