Big Second Half Lifts the #7 Lady Buffs to a Win in Lubbock, 70-59

CANYON, Texas – The #7 Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M put on an impressive second half performance on Thursday night as they snapped a 22-game home win streak by the #11 Lubbock Christian Lady Chaps in Lone Star Conference action at the Rip Griffin Center in Lubbock.
 
West Texas A&M opened the first quarter with effective shooting, highlighted by Claire Graham's back-to-back three-pointers that provided an early lead. Taylor Haggan and Henley West maintained pressure with points in the paint, contributing to a balanced offensive effort. However, Lubbock Christian responded with a strong shooting performance, making four three-pointers and taking advantage of free throw opportunities to gain momentum.
 
Despite the Lady Buffs' solid defensive efforts, including a block by West and a steal by Karley Motschenbacher, Lubbock Christian managed to close the quarter on a scoring run. The home team capitalized on turnovers and second-chance points to pull ahead. The quarter ended with the Lady Buffs trailing 25–17.
 
WT started the second quarter with a resilient effort, maintaining pressure against Lubbock Christian early on. Haggan converted a free throw at 9:02, and shortly after, she added a jumper, cutting into the lead. Graham contributed a key 3-pointer from Kyla Kane's assist at 5:02, narrowing the gap to six points.
 
As the quarter progressed, Randi Harding nailed a 3-pointer with one minute remaining, assisted by Haggan, to bring the score to 36-30. Despite several missed opportunities, West Texas A&M matched Lubbock Christian's scoring output for the quarter. The score was tied 13-13 for the quarter, keeping the overall deficit at 38-30 heading into the locker room.
 
The Lady Buffs commenced the third quarter with a strong shooting display, highlighted by Graham's 3-pointer, courtesy of an assist from Kane, at 9:37. The team maintained offensive pressure with Kane contributing both a jumper and a 3-pointer, narrowing the gap to 42–38.
 
Later, Harding's successful 3-pointer at 4:27 brought WT within striking distance, and West's free throws at 3:53 provided a brief lead at 45–44. West continued to be pivotal, hitting a crucial 3-pointer at 1:37 to regain the lead and following it with a layup and an additional free throw, extending the margin to 53–48. The Lady Buffs concluded the quarter effectively, outscoring Lubbock Christian 23–10 in the frame.
 
WT seized momentum early in the fourth quarter with Haggan's jumper increasing their lead to 55-48. Following a quick response from Lubbock Christian, the Lady Buffs extended their advantage with a series of key plays, including another layup by Haggan and a crucial three-pointer from Graham, pushing the score to 63-54.
 
Maintaining their composure, the Lady Buffs capitalized on turnovers and free-throw opportunities. Motschenbacher added to the lead with successful free throws, and Taytum Bell's three-point play further solidified their position. As the quarter concluded, WT held a commanding lead, ending the game 70-59.
 
Motschenbacher led the team with 14 rebounds and converted 7 of 8 free throws while also adding two steals. West finished with 15 points, making 5 of 8 field goals and blocking two shots. Graham contributed 12 points, converting four 3-pointers from 11 attempts. Haggan added 12 points and collected six rebounds, including three on the offensive end.
 
The Lady Buffs return to the court on Saturday afternoon with an LSC road matchup at D.L. Ligon Coliseum starting at 1:00 p.m. against the Midwestern State Mustangs in Wichita Falls.
