Buffs Split Friday’s Doubleheader at Texas A&M International

CANYON, Texas – The Buffaloes of West Texas A&M bounced back from a walkoff loss, rolling in the nightcap as they split Friday's Lone Star Conference doubleheader at Jorge Hayes Field against Texas A&M International in Laredo, Texas.
 
The Buffs and Dustdevils close out the weekend series tomorrow afternoon with first pitch of the finale scheduled for 1:00 p.m. in Laredo.
 
Game One
The Buffs jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning as senior Jovan Camacho became the first Buff since Keone Givens in 2019 to leadoff a game with a long ball with a solo shot to right center for the 1-0 lead. TAMIU would respond in the bottom of the frame with an Omar Cervantes RBI single to center to make it 1-1.
 
WT would retake the lead in the top of the second inning on an Elijah Batista triple to the wall in center that scored Dylan Fesperman followed by a Rodric Black RBI double and a J. Camacho single to center for the 4-1 advantage. 
 
The Dustdevils cut into the lead in the bottom of the second as Nomar Prieto grounded out to second to score Isaac Stanwick followed by a Joseph Cruz RBI single to make it 4-3. WT used the long ball again to extend their lead in the fifth on a Batista two-run shot to left field.
 
Texas A&M International responded again in the bottom of the frame with on a Cervantes RBI single followed by an Eddie Saenz three-run homerun to left center for the 7-6 lead. The Buffs tied the game in the top of the sixth on a Kory Schmidt double to center that plated Ryan Camacho to make it 7-7.
 
The Dustdevils retook the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning as Abiam Medina lifted a two-run homerun to left field, WT would answer in the top of the seventh on Batista's second long ball of the afternoon with one out to tie the game at 9-9. TAMIU would walk off the game in the bottom of the seventh with two outs as an errant throw gave the Dustdevils a 10-9 win.
 
Tai Phetluangsy picked up the loss (3-4) for the Buffs, allowing four runs (three earned) on three hits with three walks and two strikeouts over the final 2.2 frames.
 
Game Two
The Buffs struck first in the top of the opening frame in the nightcap as Schmidt lifted a grand slam to center field with no outs followed by a Seth Ochoa two-run long ball to left field, WT wasn't done yet as J. Camacho doubled to left center to score Josh Zapata followed later in the frame by a Micklus three-run blast to center and a Fesperman sac fly for the 11-0 lead.
 
International got on the board in the bottom of the third as Medina grounded into a double play to score Cruz to cut the lead to 11-1. Schmidt stayed hot at the plate in the top of the fifth inning as the senior singled to right with two outs to score J. Camacho followed by a wild pitch to plate Micklus and an Ochoa double that scored two for the 15-1 advantage.
 
The Buffs added to their lead in the top of the sixth as Daniel Castellanos stepped to the plate and drew a walk with the bases loaded followed by a Fesperman RBI single for the 17-1 lead. TAMIU cut into the lead in the bottom of the seventh on an Alex Lugo fielder's choice groundout to make it 17-2.
 
Julius Carpio was great on the mound for the Buffs as he moved to 5-1, allowing one earned run on five hits with four walks and three strikeouts in his 6.0 frames.
