Lady Buffs Host Sul Ross State for Senior Day

CANYON, Texas – The West Texas A&M softball team concludes its regular season home schedule on Friday when the Lady Buffs host the Sul Ross State Lobos for Senior Day. First pitch for the LSC doubleheader is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Schaeffer Park. Senior recognition will occur between games.

The Athletic Communications Department from West Texas A&M will provide live stats and a pay-per-view web stream. Fans will need to purchase a monthly ($19.99) or annual ($107.88) subscription with FloSports, the official streaming provider of the Lone Star Conference. The subscription allows fans access to any content available on FloSports.
 
A LOOK AT THE #1 LADY BUFFS
The No. 1-ranked West Texas A&M softball team flexed its offensive muscle on Wednesday night, scoring 30 combined runs in a doubleheader sweep of the UT Permian Basin Falcons. The Lady Buffs allowed a first-inning run before collecting 16 unanswered runs of their own to run-rule the Falcons, 16-1. Game two saw WT jump ahead early and never look back on its way to a 14-0 run-rule victory. The Lady Buffs improved to 36-2 in Lone Star Conference play and 46-2 overall while UT Permian Basin fell to 8-40 on the year including 3-35 in LSC action.
 
The Lady Buffs feature another high-octane lineup that ranks inside the top 10 for Division II for almost every offensive category including doubles, triples, and walks. WT leads the country in batting average, hits, home runs, on-base percentage, RBIs, runs, scoring, and slugging percentage.
 
Junior Emilee Boyer's .500 batting average ranks third in the country and leads the team where 13 different players have a .300 batting average or higher. Boyer's 81 RBIs and 1.030 slugging percentage lead Division II while her 19 home runs rank second. Lauren Granger's 143 total bases hold the national lead while her seven triples rank sixth nationally.
 
In the circle, WT has posted a 1.88 ERA with 339 strikeouts and 81 earned runs in 301 innings. All four WT pitchers have reached double-digit strikeouts including Boyer with 184, Heidi Vortherms with 107, Kendall Selitzky with 38, and Ashley Mandell with 10. The Lady Buffs' 7.88 strikeouts per seven innings ranks third while the 1.88 ERA ranks ninth.
 
Head Coach Michael Mook is in his sixth season at WT, registering a 232-55 (.808) record in that time. For his career, Mook holds 386-116 record in 10 seasons for an overall winning percentage of .769.
 
SCOUTING SUL ROSS STATE
The Lobos dropped both games to Midwestern State on Wednesday afternoon. Game one saw the Mustangs take a 4-0 lead before a pair of runs brought the game back within reach, but MSU would seal out the victory. Sul Ross State scored first in game two, but nine unanswered runs by the Mustangs pulled off a 9-1 run-rule victory.
 
Tori Owens leads the Sul Ross State offense as the junior holds a .306 batting average with a .737 OPS, .407 slugging average, and .330 on-base percentage. Owens leads the team with eight doubles and 19 RBIs. Elizabeth Clemente follows with a .305 batting average, 32 hits, and 10 RBI.
 
As a pitching staff, Sul Ross State holds a 9.59 ERA in 270.1 innings of work. During that time, opponents are hitting .388 while hitting 92 doubles, 23 triples, and 41 home runs while striking out 67 times. Alyvia Quintana leads the team with a 7.18 ERA on 22 appearances and 16 starts with nine complete games and 26 strikeouts.
 
Troy Canaba is in his 10th season as the head coach of the Sul Ross State program and 10th overall. Canaba holds a 143-222 (.392) record for her career with a matching record at the helm of the Lobos. 
 
THE SERIES
WT leads the all-time series with Sul Ross State with a 2-0 record with Friday's games being the first meetings in Canyon. The Lady Buffs are 2-0 against the Lobos under Michael Mook. Earlier this season, the Lady Buffs jumped ahead early and never looked back on their way to a 12-1 run-rule victory in game one. Game two saw Emilee Boyer twirl a complete-game shutout to secure the sweep with a 7-0 victory. Sul Ross State is in their first season as a Division II member of the Lone Star Conference following time in the American Southwest Conference (NCAA Division III).

NCAA REGIONAL RANKINGS
West Texas A&M softball was one of 10 teams in the South Central region listed under consideration for the NCAA Tournament as announced by the national office on Wednesday afternoon. For the first regional release, the teams under consideration are listed in alphabetical order. In subsequent weeks, the teams will be ranked. The first seeded rankings will be released on April 23.

NFCA RANKINGS 
WT received all 16 first-place votes to gather 400 points and the No. 1 ranking for the second week. Francis Marion jumped to the No. 2 spot with 373 points as Tampa (369) and UT Tyler (362) dropped into the No. 3 and No. 4 spots, respectively. Central Oklahoma remained at No. 5 with 446 points followed by Auburn Montgomery (318), Angelo State (302), North Georgia (291), Southern Arkansas (267), and East Stroudsburg (242) to close out the top 10.
 
The South Central region is represented by four teams with WT leading the way at No. 1. UT Tyler (4th), Angelo State (7th), and Oklahoma Christian (20th) earned spots in the rankings.
 
LSC PRESEASON POLL
Reigning National Champion UT Tyler took the top spot in the poll with 34 first-place votes and 672 points followed by WT with eight first-place votes and 642 points. Angelo State grabbed the final first-place vote for 590 points with Oklahoma Christian following at 528 points. Lubbock Christian and St. Mary's tied for fifth in the poll with each school totaling 483 points. Texas Woman's (382), Texas A&M-Kingsville (372), Cameron (348), and Eastern New Mexico (315) occupy the seventh through 10th spots, respectively. St. Edward's (293), Texas A&M International (215), Midwestern State (214), UT Permian Basin (97), and Sul Ross State (72) round out the poll.
 
UP NEXT
WT closes out the regular season on the road against LSC divisional opponents. The Lady Buffs travel down I-27 on Friday, April 25 for a doubleheader against Lubbock Christian before traveling to San Angelo for a regular-season finale against No. 7 Angelo State.
