Buffaloes Start Fast and Roll Past the Mustangs, 18-5

CANYON, Texas – The West Texas A&M Buffs plated five runs in the first inning and never looked back on their way to a 18-5 non-conference victory over the University of the Southwest Mustangs at Wilder Field on the campus of Wayland Baptist University.
 
The Buffs started off the scoring in the top of the first inning as Seth Ochoa was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to drive in Kyle Micklus followed by an Elijah Batista two-run double and a Josh Zapata two-run base hit for the 5-0 lead. USW answered in the bottom of the frame on a Vynny Chavez long ball to left to make it 5-3.
 
WT added to their lead in the third as Zac Rackham layed down a squeeze bunt to score Batista followed by a Jovan Camacho RBI double to plate Zapata, Micklus would keep the inning alive with an RBI double for the 8-3 lead.
 
Dylan Fesperman added to the WT lead in the top of the fifth inning as the senior lifted a three-run homerun to left center at 11-3. The Mustangs would respond with a long ball as a Carson Miller solo shot into the bullpen made it 11-4.
 
The Buffs added to the lead in the top of the eighth as Ochoa led off the frame with a solo homerun to left center followed by a Camacho RBI groundout and a Micklus RBI double to make it 14-4. The Mustangs would cut into the lead again in the bottom of the frame with a Timrod Sedillo sac fly to left.
 
WT would add to their total in the ninth as Batista connected on a three-run homerun to left center followed by a Rackham RBI single to make it 18-5.
 
Matt Milner picked up the win (1-1) for the Buffs, allowing four earned runs on six hits with three walks and eight strikeouts in his 5.0 innings of work.
 
The Buffaloes open their home schedule tomorrow afternoon as they host the Pioneers of Wayland Baptist for a single nine inning contest starting at Noon at Wilder Park.
