#13 West Texas A&M Outlasts the Aggies in a Five Set Thriller

CANYON, Texas – The #13 Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M moved one win closer to a share of the Lone Star Conference title on Friday as they outlasted the Cameron Aggies (25-23, 25-19, 21-25, 22-25, 15-6) at Aggie Gym in Lawton, Oklahoma.
 
West Texas A&M initiated the first set with a steady approach. Despite early errors, the team found momentum as Emma Becker and Taytum Stow executed well-timed kills. Bromli Watson facilitated multiple plays, enabling key points for the visiting team. As the set progressed, the Lady Buffs capitalized on Cameron's service errors and attack mistakes. Consistent contributions from Kaycee Cavanaugh and Currie Marusak helped establish a lead. Despite a late rally from Cameron, the Lady Buffs closed the set with a decisive kill by Cavanaugh, securing a 25-23 victory.
 
WT began the second set with steady exchanges, maintaining a close margin against Cameron. Key kills by Cavanaugh and Marusak kept the visitors level with the home team. The set shifted as the Lady Buffs capitalized on a series of errors by Cameron, including a crucial ball handling error by Anastasija Andelic, allowing the visitors to gain momentum. The Lady Buffs continued to build on this advantage with decisive plays. Becker and Marusak contributed significant kills, while a block by Parker Gladhill and Marusak further widened the gap. Despite some response from Cameron with a few successful plays, the Lady Buffs controlled the closing moments, culminating in a 25-19 victory to end the set.
 
The Lady Buffs opened the third set with an immediate response to Cameron's initial two-point lead. Key kills from Cavanaugh and Stow helped level the score early on. A series of effective plays from Gladhill and Marusak allowed the Lady Buffs to build a 9-5 advantage, showcasing a strong offensive effort. Despite a few service errors that allowed Cameron to close the gap, the Lady Buffs maintained a narrow lead through mid-set contributions from Becker and Cavanaugh. However, a late surge from Cameron, including a critical service ace and consecutive kills, shifted momentum. The Lady Buffs continued to fight back with kills from Marusak and Gladhill, but ultimately Cameron secured the set 25-21, closing out the set on a kill by Andelic.
 
WT entered the fourth set trailing and quickly capitalized on a service error by Cameron, taking an early 1-0 lead. However, Cameron responded with a series of plays, including a service ace and a kill, pulling ahead at 3-1. Stow's kill, set up by Watson, leveled the score at 3-3, but Cameron surged again to regain the lead at 7-4. Cameron extended their lead further, reaching 16-8, despite efforts from Cavanaugh and Marusak to keep the Lady Buffs within striking distance. A brief rally, highlighted by a block from Becker and Gladhill, helped cut the deficit to 16-11. As the set progressed, Cameron maintained their lead, though the Lady Buffs fought back with kills from Stow and Marusak to narrow the gap to 22-19. Despite a late push, including consecutive kills from Cavanaugh, the set concluded with Cameron securing a 25-22 victory.
 
The Lady Buffs started the fifth set with a strong surge, capitalizing on a series of errors from Cameron. Miranda Acosta's service run included an ace and contributed to an early 3-0 lead. Cavanaugh's offensive efforts were instrumental, as she delivered multiple kills to extend the advantage to 5-2. Cameron struggled to regain momentum as the Lady Buffs continued to pressure with key plays. Marusak and Watson combined for effective offensive tactics, pushing the score to 9-5. Defensive prowess was shown by Becker and Sharlotte McClintock, who combined for a pivotal block to widen the gap further. The Lady Buffs closed the set decisively, with Cavanaugh adding successive kills. Acosta's service run was capped off by a Cameron setting error, sealing the set at 15-6 in favor of the Lady Buffs.
 
Marusak recorded 19 kills and contributed 17 digs, tallying 19.5 points for the Buffs. Cavanaugh matched Marusak in kills with 19 and added 11 digs, finishing with 19 points. Hannah Pemberton led the defensive effort with 27 digs and provided seven assists. Watson facilitated the attack with 41 assists while also contributing eight digs.
 
Maria Osorio led Cameron with 12 kills on 34 attempts, recording a hitting percentage of .294, while contributing two block assists. Rachael White facilitated the offense effectively, tallying 28 assists and adding three service aces to her performance. Jennifer Valdez made a significant impact at the net, leading the team with five total blocks, including five block assists, and adding six kills.
 
The Lady Buffs close the regular season on Saturday afternoon as they battle the Oklahoma Christian Eagles with first serve set for 2:00 p.m. at Payne Athletic Center. A win in Edmond would give the Lady Buffs a share of the program's 23rd LSC regular season crown and a chance to host the LSC Championships, depending on other results around the league.
