CANYON, Texas – The #23 Buffaloes of West Texas A&M struggled defensively on Friday afternoon as they dropped their 2025 season opener to the St. Edward's Hilltoppers, 4-0 at Lucian-Hamilton Field in Austin, Texas.
 
The Hilltoppers got on the board in the home half of the first inning as Travis Chestnut reached on a single followed by a pair of stolen bases and an errant throw by the Buffs to make it 1-0. St. Edward's added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth inning as a Trevor Sebek single to right field with two outs plated Chestnut for the 2-0 lead. 
 
WT looked to take the momentum in the top of the sixth as Rodric Black reached on an SEU error to start the frame but the Hilltoppers would settle in and register three straight outs to keep it at 2-0. The Toppers added to their lead in the bottom of the frame as a pair of errors by the Buffs scored Marco Barrera followed by a Josh Graham RBI groundout to extend the SEU lead to 4-0.
 
Matt Milner picked up the loss (0-1) on the mound for the Buffs, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits with three walks and seven strikeouts in his 5.0 innings of work.
 
The Buffs and Hilltoppers return to the field tomorrow afternoon with first pitch of a doubleheader scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
