CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M Athletics is ready to kick off an exciting new tradition at the First United Bank Center on Saturday, February 8th with the first-ever "806 Day" for both the Buffs and Lady Buffs basketball teams.
This special event will honor the rich culture, landmarks, and pride of the 806-area code. The Buffs and Lady Buffs will host Lone Star Conference rival Angelo State with the Lady Buffs tipping off at 1:00 p.m. followed by the Buffs at 3:00 p.m.
In a nod to the area's culture, both the men's and women's basketball teams will wear specially designed uniforms inspired by the Texas Panhandle. These uniforms, much like the NBA's City Edition jerseys, blend bold elements of the region's history and esthetics to pay tribute to the land we call home.
The energy, history, and pride of the 806 will be on full display as fans can expect to see tributes to iconic landmarks and regional treasures throughout the event. Nodes starting from the colorful Cadillac Ranch and the world-famous Big Texan to the scenic wonders of the Palo Duro Canyon and historic Route 66.
The Texas Panhandle features numerous must-visit attractions and venues like the Amarillo Art Museum, Hodgetown, Texas Panhandle War Memorial, and the Texas Air & Space Museum. West Texas A&M is home to the largest history museum in the state of Texas. The Panhandle-Plains Historical Society was founded in 1921 by faculty and students of West Texas State Teachers College and area supporters to preserve the history of pioneer life and natural history in the West Texas region.
Kids from the 806 will also be making their presence known as
TOT Amarillo (Teams of Tomorrow) will entertain Buff Nation during halftime of both games with their basketball dribbling skill performance.
806 Day will be an unforgettable experience for attendees as they will be immersed in the vibrant spirit of the region with elements that tie directly back to the unique charm of the Texas Panhandle.
