CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M women's basketball head coach
Josh Prock has announced the addition of Canyon native Shawna Monreal to the Lady Buffs coaching staff.
Â
"It is with a lot of enthusiasm that we are announcing the addition of Shawna Monreal to our Women's Basketball Staff, she embodies everything we are looking for as an assistant coach in our Lady Buff Basketball program" said Prock "Shawna has tremendous character and integrity with a great mind for the game and the ability to be able to relate with the young women in our program and ones that we will recruit to our program. This was a very tough process and we had a lot of quality candidates but Shawna kept rising to the top."
Â
Monreal returns to the Texas Panhandle following seven seasons of prep coaching with stops in Seymour, Shallowater, Lubbock and Frenship. She comes to WT following one season as the assistant girl's basketball and track coach at Frenship High School.
Â
"Growing up the Lady Buff's played a huge role in my basketball career. I went to their camps, watched their games and dreamt of me one day playing college basketball. When I saw that Coach Prock was in search for an assistant, it took me awhile to build up the courage to reach out to him. I am so glad I did, because Coach Prock and his staff have been so good to me since" said Monreal "The day Coach called and offered me the position I was speechless. The Lady Buffs have such a rich tradition and they chose me to be a part of it"
Â
She registered a standout collegiate career at nearby Wayland Baptist where she played 124 career games with 91 starts for the Flying Queens from 2013-2017. Monreal scored 1,100 career points in Plainview as she helped the historic WBU program to 89 victories with four trips to the NAIA Postseason and a Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament Title in 2016 to earn All-American honors.
Â
The 2012 graduate of Canyon High School is no stranger to high-level basketball as she played for legendary head coach Joe Lombard, leading the Lady Eagles to an undefeated 38-0 record in 2011 on their way to a State Championship.
Â
"She has played for and coached for some of the best coaches in the high school and college ranks. On top of that Shawna is from Canyon and that gives her a great understanding of the Lady Buff program" added Prock "Shawna is a very grounded person and will be someone who will add a lot of value to our program. Please join us in welcoming Shawna Monreal to our Lady Buff Family."
Â
"I want to say thank you to Coach Prock and Coach Sherman for believing in me and giving me this incredible opportunity to continue my coaching career at the collegiate level" added Monreal "I want to also thank all the coaches that spoke on my behalf, their words meant everything to me. Lastly I want to thank my Lord and Savior, my parents Jodie and Lorenzo Monreal, and my sisters for always supporting me. I can't wait to embark on this new journey. Go Lady Buffs!!"
