CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M's
Nick Marshall became the all-time wins leader in program history on Saturday afternoon as the #5 Buffaloes split a Lone Star Conference doubleheader with the #24 Rams of Angelo State at Foster Field in San Angelo, Texas.
The Buffs and Rams conclude the regular season tomorrow afternoon with first pitch of the series finale set for 1:00 p.m. in San Angelo. The final day of the regular season will determine the Lone Star Conference Champion as WT needs a victory in San Angelo along with a loss by Lubbock Christian at home against Eastern New Mexico to share the LSC Title with the Chaps.
GAME ONE
The Buffs jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning as
Kory Schmidt lifted a two-run homerun to right center that plated
Glenn Noronha for the 2-0 advantage. ASU responded in the home half of the frame with a Tripp Clark RBI double to score Jacob Guerrero followed later in the inning by a Tayten Tredaway RBI single up the middle to make it 2-2.
WT retook the lead in the top of the second as Noronha singled up the middle to drive in a pair followed by an Angelo State error in the outfield and a
Ryan Camacho RBI groundout for the 6-2 lead. The Buffs added to their lead in the third on a Camacho RBI groundout to plate Noronha for the 7-2 advantage.
Marshall picked up the win (5-3) for the Buffs, allowing two earned runs on four hits with three walks and seven strikeouts in his 6.0 innings of work. The senior righty from Antigo, Wisconsin is now 24-8 in Maroon & White with 220 career strikeouts to move past former All-American Joe Corbett (23, 2018-19) in the WT record book for career victories.
GAME TWO
The Rams jumped out to an early lead in the nightcap as Conagher Sands reached on a fielder's choice to drive in Tredaway for the 1-0 lead. WT responded in the top of the second as Fesperman crushes a solo shot to left field with one out to make it 1-1.
Angelo State took the lead again in the home half of the second on a Weston Valasek leadoff shot to start the frame followed by a Tredaway sac fly to center with the bases loaded to score Ryder McDaniel for the 3-1 lead. The Rams added to their lead in the third with four runs highlighted by a Clark solo homerun to left and a Velasek RBI triple for the 7-1 advantage.
The Rams broke the game open in the home half of the fifth inning with five runs as Justin Harris lifted a sac fly to right followed by a Guerrero RBI single before a three-run long ball by Clark make it 12-1. The Buffs cut into the lead in the top of the sixth on a
Jovan Camacho RBI groundout that plated
Seth Ochoa at 12-2.
WT cut into the lead in the top of the seventh inning as R. Camacho doubled down the left field line with no outs to score Noronha followed by a Schmidt two-run double off the left field wall, the Buffs weren't done yet a
Jovan Camacho singled to right center with two outs to make it 12-6.
Matt Milner picked up the loss (4-3) for the Buffs, allowing three earned runs on one hit with four walks and no strikeouts in his 1.0 innings of work.
