CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M senior
Reese Miller struck out 10 as the #5 Buffaloes took the opening game of their Lone Star Conference weekend series before splitting a Friday doubleheader with the #18 Lubbock Christian Chaps at Wilder Park in Canyon.
The Buffs and Chaps continue their LSC series tomorrow afternoon with a single nine-inning game starting at 2:00 p.m. in Canyon.
GAME ONE
LCU jumped out to an early lead in the top of the second inning on a Hayden Blair RBI single thru the left side with two outs to drive in Brevin McCool for the 1-0 advantage.
The Buffs responded in the home half of the third inning as
Ryan Camacho doubled down the right field line to drive in
Elijah Batista followed later in the frame by a
Dylan Fesperman two-run double down the left field line for the 3-1 lead.
Fesperman added to the WT lead in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI double into the left field corner to score
Kyle Micklus to make it 4-1. The Buffs used the long ball to add to their lead in the bottom of the sixth as Batista lifted a solo homerun to left field for the 5-1 lead.
Miller was dominant on the mound (4-2) for the Buffs as the senior allowed just one earned run on three hits with five walks and 10 strikeouts in his 6.0 innings of work.
Douglas Rojas closed out the win in the seventh, allowing one hit with a pair of strikeouts in the 5-1 victory.
GAME TWO
The Chaps jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning of the nightcap as Carson Ogilvie started the game with a solo homerun to left field for the 1-0 lead. LCU used the long ball again in the top of the second as Brevin McCool lifted a solo shot to left center followed later in the frame by a three-run triple to the gap in right center by Ogilvie for the 5-1 lead.
The Buffs cut into the lead in the bottom of the third inning on a Fesperman two-run single thru the left side to plate Micklus and Camacho.
LCU added to their lead in the top of the fourth inning on a Jared Gibson two-run single to right field to make it 7-2. The Chaps added to their lead again in the top of the fifth on a Frayner Chavez RBI single thru the right side for the 8-2 lead.
Justice Hayes picked up the loss (5-1) for the Buffs, allowing five earned runs on four hits with two walks and a strikeout in his 2.0 innings of work.
