Fast Start Sends the #4 Buffs Home with Another LSC Series Win

CANYON, Texas – The #4 Buffs of West Texas A&M plated seven runs in the first inning and never looked back as they picked up a 13-5 win on Saturday afternoon to close out the Lone Star Conference series victory over the Arkansas-Fort Smith Lions at Crowder Field in Fort Smith, Arkansas.
 
The Buffs jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning as Kyle Micklus doubled to the power alley in right center with no outs to score Paul Wittmann followed by a Kory Schmidt RBI single to left to plate Ryan Camacho as UAFS made an early move to the bullpen, Dylan Fesperman extended his hitting streak to 24 games with a two-run triple off the center field wall followed by a wild pitch to make it 5-0 with no outs. WT wasn't done yet as Rodric Black singled to left with one out to score Seth Ochoa followed by a Wittmann RBI groundout for the 7-0 lead.
 
WT added to their lead in the top of the second inning on a Black single to center that plated a pair for the 9-0 lead. The Lions responded in the home half of the third inning on a Blayse Quarnstrom three-run homerun to right field with two outs to make it 9-3.
 
The Buffs added to their lead in the top of the third as Fesperman drove in his third run of the game with a sac fly to center that scored Camacho followed by an errant throw by the Lions to score Schmidt for the 11-3 lead. UAFS cut into the lead again in the home half as Jordon Helm grounded out to third to score Brandon Ulmer to make it 11-4.


WT extended their lead in the top of the seventh inning on a Micklus two-run homerun to right center to make it 13-4. The Lions used the long ball to cut into the lead in the bottom of the ninth as Brandon Ulmer lifted a solo shot to right field with two outs to make it 13-5.
 
Nick Yeager picked up the win (4-1) for the Buffs, allowing four earned runs on four hits with three walks and seven strikeouts in his 6.0 innings of work.
 
The Buffs return to Wilder Park for Lone Star Conference action next weekend as they welcome the Eagles of Oklahoma Christian to Canyon for a four-game series beginning on Friday night at 6:30 p.m.
