Bats Come Alive in Pair of Lady Buffs Wins

CANYON, Texas – The West Texas A&M softball put on an offensive clinic against Western New Mexico on Thursday, hitting 10 home runs and scoring 34 runs over 10 innings. The Lady Buffs took game one of the series 17-2 before putting up 17 runs again in the second game.

WT (32-3, 24-2 LSC) faces the Mustangs (7-26, 4-22 LSC) tomorrow at 1 p.m. for the series finale in Silver City.

THE BASICS
Game 1 Score: West Texas A&M 17, Western New Mexico 2 (5 Inn.)
Pitching: (W) Ashley Mandell (6-0); Kamerynn Cordova (3-13)

WT started the scoring quickly as Brittni Rufus doubled off the center-field wall with one out. After an Emilee Boyer single, Diana Murtha lined a single to center field to score Rufus and give the Lady Buffs an early lead. Later in the inning, a two-out walk from Gabriella Valforte loaded the bases.  Western New Mexico eventually escaped the inning to limit the WT scoring.

The power from the Lady Buffs' lineup came out in the top of the second as a one-out single set up a Lauren Granger blast to right-center field. After a Rufus groundout, Boyer launched a 1-2 pitch out of the ballpark. Murtha followed Boyer's blast with a solo shot of her own to extend the lead to 5-0. The Mustangs got a run back in the bottom of the inning as an error and double down the line scored a run.

WT continued its hot streak at the plate in the third when Heaven Moreno singled on a bunt followed by a Megan Guericke walk. With two on, Emily Liskai launched her second home run of the season, pushing the lead to 8-1. A Granger single set up a Rufus bunt single which scored Granger on a throwing error and put Rufus on third. Boyer brought home the Lady Buffs' 10th run of the game on a line drive to left. A single and walk set up a Madison Johnson single and error by the left fielder to score Boyer. Valforte matched Johnson's success with a single to right of her own eventually setting up a Moreno sacrifice fly.

The Lady Buffs continued to score in the fourth as an error, single from Justine Navarra, and wild pitch allowed Riley Stiner to drive in Trinity Kuntz. Johnson drove in Navarra on a fielder's choice. In the bottom of the fourth, an RBI single from the Mustangs brought the score to 15-2. WT capped off its scoring in the top of the fifth as Rufus left the yard with a two-out home run to right-center field.

THE BASICS
Game 2 Score: West Texas A&M 17, Western New Mexico 4 (5 Inn.)
Pitching: (W) Emilee Boyer (14-1); (L) Labraida Tenorio (2-8)

Western New Mexico took an early lead in game two after hitting a one-out two-run home run to hold a 2-0 lead after the first inning. WT tied the game up in the next half inning as a Murtha walk came around to score on Valforte's double to right center. As Guericke walked, Valforte took off for third, stealing the base before scoring on an obstruction call by the Mustangs.

In the third, the Lady Buffs offense exploded for 15 runs on 11 hits and an error. A single and a walk set up a Murtha three-run blast before Johnson made it back-to-back jacks with a solo shot. Guericke added to the scoring with a two-run home run to right-center field. With two outs in the inning, Boyer launched WT's third home run of the inning to extend the lead to 11-2. A few batters later, Valforte connected on a three-run home run of her own, bringing the score to 14-2. Braeland Booth reached on an error where Moreno came in to score. Halie Stoneking recorded her first RBI in the series as the junior doubled in Guericke followed by a Kiley Avery single to score Booth.

Western New Mexico plated two runs in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single and bases-loaded walk. The two runs couldn't spark the offense for the Mustangs as the Lady Buff lead was far too big to come back from.
