Lady Buffs Sweep Series with Western New Mexico

SILVER CITY, N.M. – West Texas A&M softball completed another Lone Star Conference series sweep with a 9-1 victory over Western New Mexico. The Lady Buffs improve to 33-3 on the season and lead the league with a 25-2 record.

Lauren Granger wasted no time getting WT on the score board as the sophomore blasted a 2-0 pitch out to left. That proved to be the only runs in the opening inning for the Lady Buffs before Emilee Boyer turned in a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom half.

In the second inning, a Megan Guericke single to lead off the inning came in to score a batter later when Emily Liskai connected on a two-run home run. With one out in the inning, a Brittni Rufus bunt single came in to score as well as Boyer slugged a two-run shot of her own. Western New Mexico got a run back in the bottom half of the inning on a lead off solo homer.

WT added to its lead an inning later after taking advantage of three errors from the Mustangs' defense. Moreno started the inning by lining a ball to the center fielder, but the defender couldn't complete the catch, allowing Moreno to reach second. After a pair of outs, Granger reached on an error by the third baseman. With runners on first and third, Granger took off for second where the throw went high to score Moreno. A Rufus walk and stolen base put runners on second and third where Boyer singled in a pair of runs, pushing the lead to 8-1. The Lady Buffs capped the scoring and brought the run rule into effect a batter later as Diana Murtha doubled down the left field line to score Boyer.

Over the next three innings, the WT pitching staff shut down the Western New Mexico offense. During the Mustangs' three trips to the plate, the Lady Buffs allowed just one hit with one strikeout.

The Lady Buffs begin a six-game home stand on Friday, April 5 with rival Lubbock Christian starting things off. WT hosts the Lady Chaps at 5 p.m. on Friday before a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. on Saturday, April 6.
