CANYON, Texas – The #5 Buffaloes of West Texas A&M split Saturday's Lone Star Conference doubleheader with the Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds, falling in the first game before pulling out an extra-inning victory in the nightcap at Greyhound Field in Portales, New Mexico.
The Buffs and Greyhounds close out the series tomorrow afternoon in Portales with first pitch of the finale set for 2:00 p.m. CT.
GAME ONE
The Buffs didn't waste any time getting on the scoreboard to start the afternoon as
Ryan Camacho tripled down the right field line to score
Paul Wittmann and
Kyle Micklus followed later in the frame by a
Kory Schmidt RBI groundout to short that plated Camacho for the 3-0 lead.
Eastern would answer in the home half of the first as Daniel Pruitt grounded out to short with one out to drive in Luciana Terilli to make it 3-1. Tirelli drove in his first run of the game in the second with a sac fly to left that plated Beau Preston, cutting the lead to 3-2.
The Buffs responded with runs in the next two innings as
Dylan Fesperman singled to right to score Micklus with two outs in the third followed by a Micklus sac fly in the fourth that plated
Rodric Black for the 5-2 lead. ENMU answered in the home half of the fourth as Demetrio Archuleta lifted a two-run double to the wall in left center with two outs to make it 5-3.
The Hounds took their first lead of the afternoon in the bottom of the fifth as Landon Pyles doubled down the left field line with the bases loaded and two outs to drive in three for the 7-5 advantage. ENMU added an insurance run in the sixth as Cooper Hamilton singled to right with one out to score Willie Ponce to make it 8-5.
Matt Milner picked up the loss (2-1) for the Buffs, allowing seven runs (six earned) on six hits with three walks and two strikeouts in his 4.2 innings of work.
GAME TWO
Eastern New Mexico got on the board first in the nightcap in the home half of the third as Preston grounded out to second with one out to score Pyles for the 1-0 lead.
The Buffs responded in the top of the fourth as Black singled thru the right side with the bases loaded and one out to score
Kory Schmidt to make it 1-1. ENMU looked to answer in the bottom of the frame as a wild pitch with one out moved two runners into scoring position,
Nick Yeager locked in and registered his third strikeout followed by a flyout to
Josh Zapata in right to keep it 1-1.
WT took their first lead of the game in the top of the fifth as Fesperman tripled to the left center field gap with two outs to drive in Wittmann and Micklus followed by a Zapata RBI single to left for the 4-1 lead. ENMU cut into the lead in the bottom of the fifth as Terilli doubled down the left field line to score Pyles followed by an errant throw by the Buffs with two outs to score Terilli at 4-3.
ENMU tied up the game in the bottom of the sixth as a leadoff single along with a WT error put a runner in scoring position with no outs, Rutger Poiry doubled down the right field line to score Dylan Shea to make it 4-4.
The Buffs would retake the lead in the top of the 10
th inning as Schmidt started off the frame with an infield single followed by a wild pitch as pinch-runner
Patrick Donovan moved into scoring position, Fesperman layed down a sacrifice bunt before Black lifted a shallow sac fly to right as Donovan tagged up to make it 5-4.
Rees Miller picked up the win (2-0), allowing one unearned run on three hits with two walks and seven strikeouts in his 5.0 innings of relief.
Mason Caperton claimed his first save of the season, allowing no runs on a hit in the final frame.
