CANYON, Texas – The #5 Buffs gave up five unanswered runs over the final four frames on Sunday afternoon before a bases clearing double by
Rodric Black with two outs in the bottom of the ninth gave WT a wild 10-9 victory over the Cameron Aggies at Wilder Park in Canyon, Texas.
The Aggies jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning as Spencer Simpson lifted a solo homerun to right center with two outs for the 1-0 advantage. The Buffs answered in the home half of the frame as
Kory Schmidt connected on a three-run bomb to left center for the 3-1 lead.
Cameron cut into the lead in the second on an Elijah Tolsma RBI single to left with two outs that plated Holden Tate to make it 3-2. The Aggies tied it up in the fourth as Tolsma drove in his second run of the game with an infield single with two outs to make it 3-3.
The Aggies retook the lead in the top of the fifth inning as Wyatt Grant singled thru the left side with two outs to plate Donovan Borg for the 4-3 advantage. The Buffs plated four runs in the home half of the fifth as
Ryan Camacho tripled to the right field corner to plate a pair followed by a two-run homerun to left center by
Dylan Fesperman for the 7-4 lead.
Cameron used the long ball to cut into the lead in the top of the sixth as Gabe Clyden lifted a solo shot to left center with two outs to make it 7-5. The Aggies cut into the lead again in the seventh as Grant doubled to the warning track in left to score Simpson all the way from third, Cameron added an insurance run in the top of the ninth on a Holden Tate RBI double to the wall in center to make it 9-7.
The Buffs made things interesting in the bottom of the ninth as Wittmann started the frame with a walk followed by a flyout to left and a Camacho single to left, Cameron made a pitching change and registered a strikeout followed by an error to load the bases before a Black doubled down the left field line to clear the bases and give the Buffs a 10-9 win.
Chase Weaver became just the third true-freshman to start on the mound for the Buffs under head coach
Matt Vanderburg and the first since the 2010 season, joining Kyle Bartsch (2010) and Zach Walker (2009). The Hamilton, Texas product allowed three earned runs on six hits with no walks and seven strikeouts in his 4.0 innings of work in the no decision.
Max Lankford picked up the win (1-0) for the Buffs, registering the final two outs of the top of the ninth to strand a pair of Aggies.
The Buffs hit the road next weekend for a four-game Lone Star Conference series in Odessa against the UT Permian Basin Falcons beginning on Friday at 2:00 p.m at Roden Field.
