Lady Buffs Dominate Competition in Los Lunas

LOS LUNAS, N.M. – The West Texas A&M softball team continued its hot start to the season with two more wins on Saturday. In the Lady Buffs' first game of the afternoon, WT defeated UC-Colorado Springs 15-0 in five innings behind a strong pitching performance and offensive showing. The afternoon game saw the Lady Buffs defeat CSU Pueblo 11-3.
 
WT ends the South Central Regional Challenge tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. Central against Fort Lewis.
 
THE BASICS

The Lady Buffs came out swinging as Emilee Boyer singled followed by a Diana Murtha walk. Madison Johnson doubled to bring in Boyer before Heaven Moreno singled to bring in Johnson and Murtha. In the second, Murtha forced a bases-loaded walk to bring in another run.
 
WT exploded for six runs in the third to put the game out of reach for the Mountain Lions and extend the lead to 10-0. Braeland Booth started the scoring with an RBI double. Lauren Granger came into score on a wild pitch while Halie Stoneking batted. The Lady Buffs took advantage of an error by the UCCS' left fielder, scoring two runs on the play. WT added two more on a double by Murtha and an error by the shortstop, extending the lead to double digits.
 
The fourth inning saw the Lady Buffs score four more runs, doing so on just one hit. In the fifth inning, WT scored its final run on a bases-loaded fielder's choice to reach the final score of 15-0.
 
THE BASICS

The ThunderWolves struck first in the bottom of the first. After a strikeout and walk started the inning, a stolen base moved the runner to third. CSU Pueblo scored its first run on an error by the Lady Buffs' left fielder, taking a 1-0 lead. The next batter singled to left to push the advantage to 2-0.
 
The CSU Pueblo lead held up until the top of the fourth where WT scored seven runs on four hits and a ThunderWolves' error. The inning started with a single from Murtha followed by a triple from Johnson. After Johnson's triple, Moreno reached on an error to bring home Johnson and tie the game. Soon after the RBI, WT loaded the bases where back-to-back walks from Stoneking and Rufus forced in a pair of runs and a CSU Pueblo pitching change. An RBI groundout from Boyer brought home the Lady Buffs' fifth run before Murtha doubled to clear the bases and extend the lead to 7-2. In the bottom half of the inning, a sacrifice fly brought home a run to bring the score within four.
 
In the fifth, Booth brought home a run when the WT catcher grounded out to short. The Lady Buffs started to pull away in the sixth when Murtha homered to bring the score to 9-3. WT capped off its scoring in the top of the seventh with a pair of runs. After two errors from CSU Pueblo, Booth singled to bring in two.
